Homeless man found dead in Lansford woods

A 39-year-old man was found dead in a wooded area in Lansford Tuesday afternoon.

Jason Tessitore of Lansford was pronounced dead in an area between Spring Garden and East Water streets at around 5:49 p.m., Carbon County Coroner Mark K. Smith said.

The cause and manner of his death are pending, the coroner said. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Tessitore’s body was found around 5 p.m. Troopers were on the scene along with Lansford police, the Carbon County’s Coroner’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and county detectives into the early evening.

As news spread of the discovery, family members and friends arrived at the staging area at the end of South Walnut Street after 6 p.m. A few people walked back along the trail to talk to investigators.

Troopers said this was an isolated incident and there was no threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing.

Tessitore was released from the Carbon County prison on $1,000 bail April 1 after being arrested on retail theft, assault, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness charges after an incident in Boyer’s Food Market in Lansford.

He was listed as homeless at the time of his arrest.
