Lansford Borough plans park upgrades

Lansford Borough looks forward to activities in its parks and plans upgrades to the infrastructure.

Borough council planned to apply for a grant to extend electrical service in Ashton Park to accommodate events such as the Halloween festival.

Council estimated the work to extend electrical service to the south side of the pool parking lot at about $75,000, said Bruce Markovich, council president.

The estimates, however, came in $23,000 lower, he said.

Markovich told council members the grant must be submitted by May 1, and he’d like to add another water line to the concession stand as part of the grant application.

“Right now, if the pool water isn’t turned on, there’s no water in the concession stands,” he said.

A new water line would allow the concession stand to open without the pool water being on, and also extend the season for events at the park through the fall and even into December, Markovich said.

The borough could even have a Christmas event at the park, and the concession stand would also have hot water, he said.

Markovich anticipates the water line would cost about $15,000.

Councilwoman Gwyneth Collevechio said that members of Nuthin But Luv Familia were cleaning up and around the skate park at Ashton Park last month.

The group also did a cleanup last year, and wanted to change the name of the skate park to Nuthin But Luv Park.

Collevechio told members that they couldn’t take down the current sign and change it, and that they would have to talk to council.

She invited them to council’s committee meetings, but they did not show up on Tuesday.

Collevechio also talked Heather Barna Dowling, of Sync Recovery Community, about doing something in Lansford for those in recovery or coming out of incarceration and their families.

Collevechio suggested possibly doing a picnic or supper at the pool park, possibly using the concession stand. She said it would be a family event, and she would keep council posted.
