Weatherly Borough’s application for a license to construct a hydroelectric plant at the Francis E. Walter Dam on the Lehigh River in Carbon and Luzerne counties was denied by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The commission said in its decision the borough’s application is not compatible with the proposed modifications by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The plan called for a new 175-foot long gate to be connected to the Corps’ outlet conduit; a new powerhouse with an installed capacity of 5,000 kilowatts of electricity; a new 7½-mile long transmission line; and other equipment that would operate a hydraulic head at 60 feet.
