Catherine Kimmel, 13, a student at SS. Peter and Paul School, Lehighton, and Stephen Hirochek, 12, who attends St. Michael’s School, Lansford, were named the eighth and seventh grade champions, respectively, of the annual Carbon County Spelling Bee.

About 150 persons attended the sixth annual event held last night in the Lehighton Area Junior High School.

Nine schools in the county were represented in the event by the 18 participants who went through 184 words before the winners were declared.

Kimmel is a daughter of Mrs. Elaine Dunkle of Lehighton while Hirochek is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hirochek of Nesquehoning.
