Carbon commissioners recognize 4-H Clubs

“If you ate today, thank a farmer.”

That was the message the Carbon County Commissioners sent on Thursday as they adopted a proclamation recognizing March 17-23 as 4-H Week.

The board commended the program for helping to lead children to become future leaders, farmers, veterinarians and more.

Three 4-H members accepted the proclamation.

Amanda and Daphne Gowin and Cadence Graver all spoke about what they do in the program.

The three all are in the livestock club, as well as various other groups within the program.

Kayla Fusselman, 4-H extension educator, said it was great to have the support of the commissioners.

“It really shows the community what 4-H is and it gets to put our members and leaders in the spotlight,” she said. “They’re showing animals or creating projects or running fair programs, but you know, to have them attend a meeting is a great opportunity to show them how much government and the community support them.”

Carbon County currently has two year-round clubs - livestock and the Mahoning Valley Community Club - as well as a potato judging club in December and summer camps.

Within the clubs, there are various groups, including raising a variety of animals, sewing, crocheting, gardening and more that provide opportunities for children to learn skills to help them in future endeavors.

Commissioner Wayne Nothstein highlighted the annual livestock auction, held the last day of the Carbon County Fair, which showcases 4-Hers hard work in various areas of livestock. This year’s auction will take place on Aug. 10.

Carbon County 4-H, which is operated under Penn State Extension, has been a staple in the community for decades. It is open to children ages 5 to 18.

For those who would like more information, Fusselman said they can contact the county Penn State Extension office at 570-325-2788, email her at klf5601@psu.edu or check out the Carbon County 4-H Facebook page.

“There are great opportunities in 4-H and we hope to see new members,” she said.
