Local roundup: Results from March 22

Pleasant Valley posted wins in softball and boys tennis action Friday, while the Palmerton baseball and softball teams each recorded victories.

BASEBALL

Lehighton-Pen Argyl

A big fourth inning helped Lehighton secure a 10-7 non-league win over Pen Argyl.

The Tribe (3-0) padded a 5-3 lead with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Carter Birnbaum (three RBIs) and Aiden Rarick each had two hits for the winners.

Michael Yeakel homered and had two RBIs for Lehighton. Adam Bastone doubled with two runs scored and an RBI.

Bradley Risssmiller (RBI, two runs scored, double) and Lincoln Kuster (two runs scored) each had three hits for the Green Knights (2-1), who scored once in the bottom of the fourth and three times in the bottom of the sixth after trailing 10-3.

Catasauqua-Palmerton

Palmerton answered a strong start by Catasauqua with six runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to an 11-5 Colonial League victory.

AJ Borger was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Brady Reph added two hits, four RBIs and three runs scored for the Bombers (2-2), who trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the first. Cameron Pengelly earned the win, pitching six and a third innings of no-hit ball in relief, striking out nine.

Matthew Fotta had a double and an RBI for the Rough Riders (0-3), who had just two hits.

Northwestern-Salisbury

Three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning helped Salisbury knock off Northwestern 3-1 in Colonial League play.

Caleb Gonzales and Thomas Lovelidge (run scored) each had a hit and knocked in a run for the Falcons (2-1). Austin Spisszak allowed no runs with five strikeouts in six innings pitched to earn the win.

Joshua Lichman doubled for the Tigers (1-3), scored a run in the top of the first and had a walk.

PM East-Pleasant Vy.

Pocono Mountain East pulled away from Pleasant Valley for an 11-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win.

Rocco DelGiudice was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Cardinals (2-0), who scored four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to extend what was a 6-3 lead. Adam Horvath added two hits, including a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and a pair of walks. Bobby Ehrmann also had a double among his two hits.

Zach Pandolfo was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Bears (2-1). Dakoda Lucas added a double.

CMVT-Marian

Marian erupted for 11 runs in the first inning en route to a 19-4 non-league victory over Columbia Montour Vo-Tech in four innings.

Malina Letcher had a double and triple among her three hits for the Fillies (2-0), who have scored 38 runs through two games. Danica Karlick also had three hits and earned her second win in the circle, while Emily Upanavage (double) and DeAnna Pugh each had two hits.

Wallace had two hits, including a double, for CMVT.

Northwestern-Salisbury

Elizabeth Diehl was dominant in the circle and had a big day at the plate as Northwestern rolled to a 14-0 Colonial League win over Salisbury in five innings.

Diehl allowed just two hits and struck out nine in five innings of work for the Tigers (3-0), who have outscored opponents 35-4 through three games. She was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored at the plate. Isabelle Akelitis (double) and Shelby Mitman were each 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Emily Diehl and Rylee McGinley each doubled.

Taylor Wagner was 1-for-1 with a walk and stolen base for the Falcons (1-1).

Shenandoah-Jim Thorpe

Hannah Zacharias drove in four runs on two hits to lead Jim Thorpe a 15-5 win over Shenandoah Valley in non-league action.

Zacharias singled in the first inning to score two runs as the Olympians (2-0) built a 9-2 lead and also had three runs scored in the game. Megan Rohrman had two RBIs, two runs scored as Jim Thorpe collected nine walks. Melina Schwartz and Kaylyn Costello each had two walks, and Oleksa McAndrew stole two bases. Schwartz earned the win in the circle for the Olympians, striking out seven and walking none.

A. Menjivar was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Blue Devils (0-2). H. DeAngelo had two hits.

Catasauqua-Palmerton

Carly Gaffney had a big day in the circle and at the plate to lead Palmerton to an 11-1 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Gaffney tossed a complete-game, five-hitter and struck out 12 to keep the Rough Riders’ bats silent. Offensively, she had two hits and three RBI.

Also playing well for the Bombers (3-0, 2-0) were Hailey Barry (three hits, two runs, one RBI) and Mikayla Pengelly (two hits, one run scored, one RBI, two stolen bases)

Makayla Bird had two hits for Catasauqua (0-2, 0-2)

Brianca Pridham had a double, a home run, and six RBIs to lead Pleasant Valley to a 17-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pocono Mountain East.

Samantha Ratti (two hits, two RBIs) and Hailey Krock (four runs scored) also had home runs for the Bears. Other offensive stars were Lydia Borger (two hits, two runs); Jovie Valenzuela (one hits, three RBIs) and Danica Getz (one hit, three runs).

Getz was also the winning pitcher as she went the distance in the four-inning, mercy-rule shortened contest. She allowed one hit and struck out four.

The victory improves Pleasant Valley’s record to 2-0 overall and in the EPC. Pocono Mountain East falls to 0-2 both overall and in the league.

Lehighton-Pen Argyl

Pen Argyl exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a tie game and defeat Lehighton, 13-3, in non-league action.

The Indians, who scored twice in the top of the sixth to temporarily tie the game at 3-3, got two hits apiece from Maggie Pagotto and Ava Trach. Trach scored a run and knocked in a run. Lehighton (0-3) also got a hit and an RBI from Morgan Myers and Makenna Snyder. Addison Chavanic had a hit and scored a run.

Jill Bradley had two hits and five RBIs for Pen Argyl (2-0).

Karlye Teman starred at the plate and in the circle to leads Palisades to a 10-3 win over Northern Lehigh in Colonial League action.

Teman struck out 11 and allowed two hits with two earned runs in seven innings pitched for the Pirates (2-0). At the plate, Teman was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Catherine Russo (triple, run scored), Kayla Russo (triple, two RBIs) and Ava Paglianite (run scored) all had two hits in the win.

Haylie Fenstermaker and Kaitlyn Stock (double) had hits for the Bulldogs (1-2), while Peyton Hoffman had an RBI.

Pleasant Valley cruised to a 7-0 win over East Stroudsburg South in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

John Hargrave, Noah Dolan and Ben Keppel won singles matches for the Bears (3-2). The teams of Chris Lanier and Roman Steuer, Aaron Rehrig and Jens Hansen, Damon McMurty and Logan Krock and Liam Angell and Keegan Wills posted wins in doubles action.
