A Walnutport resident is worried for the safety of her children along a busy stretch of roadway.
Rebekah Heeres, who lives on Lehigh Gap Street, told borough council at last week’s meeting about an incident that occurred earlier that day.
Heeres said a truck ran the stop sign at the intersection of Fifth and Lehigh Gap Street and almost T-boned a borough police car.
“I’m scared for my children,” Heeres said. “One of our own police (vehicles) almost got T-boned.”
Borough police Chief Pete Wayda told Heeres that the matter was already being looked into.
Heeres asked if there can be additional signage because her children cross Lehigh Gap Street to get to the school bus.
Borough road foreman Michael Wentz said that in order for anything to be done, a traffic study would need to be conducted, and that the borough has to follow Pennsylvania Department of Transportation regulations.
After the meeting, Wentz said the borough’s streets and public safety officials discussed the situation.
Wentz said a red flashing LED light will be affixed to the stop sign at the intersection to attract some attention, and that there will be a stronger police presence.
