Schuylkill OKs Kline restroom upgrade

The Kline Township Municipal Building is getting a new handicap accessible restroom thanks to federal money.

On Wednesday, the Schuylkill County Commissioners voted to approve a contract with Tri-Vet Contracting Co., Pine Grove, to install the Americans with Disabilities Act restroom in the municipal building - also known as the Kelayres Town Hall - for $36,900 that will be paid for with federal Community Development Block Grant funds.

The commissioners also approved moving $8,161.28 from the county demolition fund to the project. Cheryl Fuss, the county’s grant writer, said the funds transfer was necessitated by the fact that the bids for the project “came in higher than anticipated.”

The commissioners also approved advertising for another CDBG ADA project at the J.E. Morgan Park in West Penn Township. Bids via PennBid will be due Wednesday, April 10 at 9 a.m., at which time they will be opened.

A number of properties will be torn down thanks to cooperation agreements the commissioners entered into Wednesday with the following municipalities:

• Ryan Township, 7 Mansure Road;

• West Mahanoy Township, 257 and 411 Mt. Olive, 1157 W. Lloyd St., and 4 Newtown Road;

• Girardville, 7-9 W. Ogden St., and 341 W. Mahanoy Ave.

• Mahanoy City, 512-514 W. Centre St., and 520, 522 and 524 Railroad St.

• St. Clair, 265 Front St., and 146 N. Nicholas St.

• Minersville, 2 Sunbury St., and 16 N. Delaware Ave.

• Schuylkill Haven, 119 Parkway.

The commissioners also advertised for demolition bids in Ryan and West Mahanoy townships, as well as the boroughs of Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, Girardville and Minersville. Bids via PennBid are due Monday, April 8, and will be opened at the commissioners’ meeting Wednesday, April 10.

Parks and Rec study committee

The commissioners voted to appoint a study committee to develop a Comprehensive Parks, Recreation and Open Space plan. The county was awarded $63,600 from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources from its Keystone Recreation Park and Conservation Fund.

The commissioners also appointed two board members to the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance - Robert Carl Jr., the president and CEO of the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce, and Courtney Fasnacht, director of workforce development for the Manufacturers and Employers Association.

The commissioners also appointed David Frew of Pine Grove to fill the unexpired term until Dec. 31, 2026, of Noble C. Quandel on the Schuylkill County Airport Authority.
