Lehighton police will try to stop tobacco sales to minors

Lehighton Police Department plans to combat the sale of tobacco products to minors.

Borough police Chief Troy Abelovsky discussed the initiative at Monday’s borough council meeting.

Abelovsky said the police department plans to work in conjunction with the American Lung Association to conduct tobacco compliance checks of local retailers in the spring and fall of this year.

He said the American Lung Association provided a list of all local retail establishments and may contribute funding to offset the costs.

“Lehighton Borough Police Department is excited to partner with the American Lung Association to ensure our tobacco retailers are staying in compliance and not allowing persons under the age of 21 to acquire tobacco products,” Abelovsky said. “The police department is dedicated to the health and well-being of our community residents.”
