Monroe commissioners approve courthouse expenses

The Monroe County Courthouse Renovation/Expansion Project was among those the commissioners approved related expenses at their meeting on Wednesday.

The commissioners approved a limited-service agreement with Pennoni Associates Inc. for services at $850 per event for the courthouse project. John Christy, the chairman of the commissioners, said that this is “for any suspected asbestos that might have been used in prior construction or installations.”

The commissioners also approved change orders to Lobar Construction for additional work and credit totaling $19,533.62 for the courthouse project. Christy explained that the large generators the county wanted to purchase were going to take longer than expected to manufacture, so they went with different units.

“Even this unit was delayed,” Christy said.

There were also sidewalk issues.

“We needed to excavate the sidewalk and expand out into the area of the sidewalk. Therefore, we needed to build precast sections of sidewalk and crane them into place to span that area, thus the change order.”

On a different project, the commissioners are looking into areas that need to be fixed on the county parking deck. They approved an agreement with Walker Consultants for professional consulting services.

“The parking deck is over 40 years old. The engineer that the county has used in the past has retired,” Christy said. “We know from his latest report that we need to do repairs on the Helix that allows travel in and out. Being that it is so old additional upgrades in the future are more apparent.”

The Asset Management Plan for the parking deck project was approved in the amount of $57,020.

The commissioners also handled some business related to grants. They are as follows:

• Approved the fiscal director to electronically sign the FY 24 Mosquito-borne Disease Control Contract for the period of Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 in the amount of $133,717;

• Acknowledged receipt of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Grant Program Agreement, Federal Fiscal Year 2023, an award of $893,705, and;

• Acknowledge receipt of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Fiscal Year 2023-2024 Hazardous Material Response Grant Agreement in the amount of $7,821.
