Panthers’ Banks wins state title

HERSHEY - Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks capped a perfect season by winning the 235-pound title at the first-ever PIAA Girls Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at the Giant Center.

The sophomore topped Souderton’s MacKenna Atkinson 3-0 in the finals. It was a rematch of the Southeast Regional final, which Banks won 7-1.

After two scoreless periods, Banks went ahead 1-0 with an escape to start the third period. She added to the margin with a takedown with 1:03 left in the match to make it 3-0, which is how the score would stay.

The victory caps a stellar season for Banks, who was unbeaten at 29-0 and also captured district and regional titles in the first year girls wrestling was sanctioned by the PIAA. Banks won the state title a year ago in a non-PIAA event.

Northwestern’s Luke Fugazzotto also had a remarkable run in the boys Class 2A tournament. The sophomore claimed his first state medal in his second appearance at the event with a runner-up finish at 172 pounds. Fugazzotto was pinned by defending state champion Adam Waters of Faith Christian Academy in 1:41 in the finals.

Northwestern’s Katie Brensinger also medaled at the first PIAA girls tournament Saturday. The senior pinned Lake Lehman’s Alahna Morris in 1:44 to place fifth at 148 pounds.
