Student cited after Thorpe crash

A 17-year old Jim Thorpe High School student was taken to the hospital Friday following a crash after school in the borough.

According to police, Eric Irizarry, 17, told officers he was traveling at a high rate of speed through the school parking lot when he lost control of his vehicle, which went over a curb and struck a tree.

Police Chief Joe Schatz said the crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on Orchard Lane near Jim Thorpe’s athletic stadium.

Irizarry was injured, Schatz said, and transported to St. Luke’s Carbon by Lehighton EMS.

Traffic citations, Schatz added, were filed against Irizarry.
