Nesquehoning Borough Council
Nesquehoning Borough Council discussed or acted on the following items during its monthly meeting last week.
• Reported Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad will need to come before the borough and county planning commissions regarding its plan for constructing a passenger station on its property along Route 54.
• Reported RBMN petitioned the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission about the crossing at Tippets Road, asking to change it from private to public crossing.
Council President David Hawk said that it is in both the borough’s and railroad’s interest in this to get signaling and gates at that crossing.
• Reappointed Joe Guardiani as secretary of the civil service commission. The term is for six years.
• Approved a motion to distribute social media policies to all active members of the three fire departments with a requirement that they sign an acknowledgment form stating that they would abide by it.
• Councilwoman Lois Kuba announced that the next boot drive fundraiser to help the three fire departments will take place in the borough on April 7, with a rain date of April 14.
• Councilman Bruce Nalesnik announced that street sweeping in the borough is scheduled for May 6-10.
• Nalesnik also noted that he met with the borough engineer regarding possible paving projects.
• The electricity project at New Columbus Park has been completed. This will allow the borough to hold events at the park.
• Work continues on getting estimates for upgrades at the Nesquehoning Recreation Center.
• Approved advertising for three additional events committee members to help with borough activities. Letters of interest should be sent to the borough.
• Kuba announced that the borough will be soon taking information for more memorial benches in the borough. More details will be released this month.
• Council spoke about the new Narrow Valley Sportsplex and how it will benefit the community. It was noted the next closest complex of this kind is about 50 miles away.
“We’re blessed to have something like that,” Councilman Paul Kattner said.
