Hurley, Smelas lead Kutztown in PSAC playoff game

Jim Thorpe graduates Leila Hurley and Olivia Smelas led the Kutztown University women’s basketball team to a 66-48 victory over Mansfield in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs on Monday.

Hurley, a sophomore, scored a game-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting, which included a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range. The former Olympian also collected four rebounds, handed out four assists, blocked a shot and added a steal.

Smelas, also a sophomore, was the team’s second-leading scorer in the contest, finishing with 17 points. Smelas was 5-of-11 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. She also pulled down six boards, delivered two assists, blocked a shot and had a steal.

The win sends the Golden Bears (15-14) into tonight’s quarterfinal round at West Chester.

On the season, Smelas is averaging 8.6 points per game and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per contest. Hurley is averaging 7.4 points per game and leads Kutztown with 44 three-pointers.
