First responders praised by W. Penn officials

West Penn Township supervisor Jim Akins thanked the township’s police, road crew, ambulance and other first responders for their “extra efforts” during the snowstorm of Feb. 12 and 13.

The area saw up to a foot of heavy wet snow from the storm, and thousands of power outages were reported.

Akins said the township called a state of emergency, and supervisors were brought to a meeting with emergency responders.

“When we showed up, they already had plans set and ready to go,” Akins said. “I thought it was a great job by the entire team.”

Board Chairman Tony Prudenti weighed in to thank first responders for their response to a fuel oil leak on Route 895/Summer Valley Road on Sunday.

According to reports, the spill resulted from the demolition of a home on the north side of the road Saturday afternoon. Demolition crews were apparently unaware that a fuel tank ruptured and spilled oil into neighboring ponds and a tributary to Lizard Creek.

“Kudos to all of them for coming out on a Sunday and taking care of it,” Prudenti said. He also noted that township secretary Katie Orlick was called to the office to retrieve the owner’s contact information.

Supervisors accepted the February activity report from the township police department. During the month, police logged 159 calls, patrolled 5,874 miles, issued 64 traffic citations and responded to 8 motor vehicle accidents in February.

The Penn Mahoning Ambulance report was also read and accepted. In it, officials noted that one of its vehicles is back in service after more than a year.

Akins encouraged residents to contribute to the ambulance’s fund drives and subscription services.

“It’s important for everyone to make those contributions not only to the ambulance association but our fire companies and all our volunteers,” he said.

Supervisors will meet at 10 a.m. March 18 at the township building. The meeting was originally scheduled for March 19.
