Fuel spill from demolished home goes into Lizard Creek

West Penn, Schuylkill County and state officials are on the scene of a fuel oil spill along Summer Valley road, Route 895 in West Penn Township.

The spill apparently came from the demolition of a home on the north side of the roadway Saturday afternoon. The demolition crew from Pottsville were apparently unaware of the fuel oil tank which they rupture, sending an undetermined amount of the oil down a drain and onto the lawn.

The oil formed a small pond along the north berm but unfortunately also found its way into a small stream feeding several ponds of a home across roadway and then on to the Lizard Creek. Those ponds were stocked with expensive domestic and foreign fish, which are reported to be dead.

Members of the West Penn fire company are working to contain the spill and maintaining traffic control at the scene.
