Eldred Township advertising again for roofing bids
Eldred Township is once again seeking bids for a roofing project.
Ann Velopolcek, the township secretary, said they advertised for bids, but didn’t get any. The project is for the roof on the township building and post office.
Bids for this second round are going to be accepted until noon on March 18.
In other business, the supervisors approved some purchases for the Public Works Department. One is for a 30-inch chainsaw that costs $1,469.
“We’ve been encountering some pretty large trees lately,” Gula said.
The approval was for up to $1,800 in case there are any additional expenses.
Another is a jumping jack rammer to tamp down ground. Its price is $3,300.
Gula said, “I figured into our budget that we’re going to start replacing our pipes prior to paving the roads, so this will be for compacting our stone when we’re installing pipes. Our current one is old and broken and hard to buy parts for it, so this will replace that one.”
On a bigger scale, the supervisors also gave conditional approval of a 96” collector broom attachment for the Case backhoe to sweep up gravel spread on roads during the winter season. The broom is made by Case and is the only one that will fit the backhoe, said Gary Hoffman, the chairman of the supervisors.
The cost of the broom was budgeted for this year, Hoffman said, but it exceeds the $12,800 threshold that usually requires municipalities to put something out to bid. He thinks this fits the exception to the rule because no other attachment will fit the machine. Still Hoffman wanted to check with the township solicitor Michael Gaul, who was not able to be at the meeting, before making the purchase.
Velopolcek said the cost of the broom attachment, water kit and installation cost $25,200.
These items were also mentioned at the meeting:
• Approved the purchase of five noise canceling desk microphones and a wireless, handheld microphone for presentations or audience members for the municipal meeting room. The new audio system will include six speakers, integration into the computer and telephone system and hooked up to the monitor as well. Total cost of equipment and installation is $6,412.18.
• Updated internet speed hardware for the Eldred Township Community Center to enable credit card transactions, and purchased panic buttons in case of an emergency.
• The shop is planning its prom and wedding dress sale for March 9. The sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• The Kunkletown Fire Company had a successful breakfast recently with about 600 people in attendance. Its next breakfast is from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on March 3.
• The fire department has three new members in fire school and two new additional members just signed up.
• Hanover Engineering, the township’s sewer enforcement officer, brought in a new employee, Paul Gallagher Saba. The supervisors approved him to be on the list of people who can do SEO work for the township.
