Pl. Valley recognizes staff, students
Several staff and students in the Pleasant Valley School District were recognized for their successes at the school board meeting on Thursday.
In his report, director Ryan O’Keefe reported that the high school’s varsity Chess team had a winning season with a 9-3 record and tied for the second most wins in the entire EPC conference. Senior Ethan Manges ended the season as the top rated player in the EPC conference with an end-of-season rating of 1768 and a win-loss-draw record of 11-0-1. The ratings for the other team members were John Onubogu, 1576, 8-3-1; Josephine Jurasits, 1428, 7-5-0; Peter Milanese, 1284, 4-5-2; Liam Angell, 1243, 7-4-1; Damon McMurtry, 1116, 6-5-0; and Logan Impellizeri, 998, 6-6-0.
On Feb. 8, the top 96 students in the EPC conference competed at the EPC Invitational at Parkland High School. Two team members received medals. Milanese, junior, finished in ninth place and earned a gold medal. Manges finished in 15th place and earned a silver medal. Other significant placements were Onubogu, senior, who finished in 24th place; and Jurasits, sophomore, in 31st place.
The Scholastic Scrimmage team also had a winning season with a 9-2-1 record this fall during the regular season. The team is currently practicing for their last competition on March 21 at Colonial IU 20.
The Debate Team finished the year with a 2-3, 9-11 record, which also included some impressive moments.
The Students of the Month and Employees of the Month for February were also recognized at the school board meeting. The students include: Alexander Meloy, Kindergarten; Maci Magluilo, first grade; Palmer Newman, second grade; Kerra Wetzel, third grade; Kohlby Polchik, fourth grade; Natalee Fenzlaff, fifth grade; David James, sixth grade; Alina Aviles, seventh grade; Emerie Gonzalez, eighth grade; Kaylie Cepeda, ninth grade; Aiden Cannarella, tenth grade; Darianna Rizvic, eleventh grade; Nicolas Arevalo Serrano, twelfth grade; and Ellie Lata, Bears Academy, twelfth grade. The employees of the month are: Darcy Caruso and Kristen Pierri at PVES, Nicole Secara and Kimberly Wimmer at PVIS, Roxanne Scott and Eddison Clarke at PVMS, and Jason Robbins and Judith Bertsch at PVHS.
