Environmental education center gets new furniture

New chairs and tables are in use at Carbon County Environmental Education Center because of community donations.

“The old ones were coming apart,” said Chief Naturalist Susan Gallagher. “When they started to crack, we knew we had to do something.”

The new seating converts from bench to table, so the room can be reconfigured as needed.

“The new ones are much more comfortable for adults,” Gallagher said. “Kids were fine at the old tables, but adults banged their shins all the time.”

The center provided programming for roughly 8,000 people last year and welcomed over 5,000 visitors. While the place is well-known for providing children’s programming, many adult sessions are offered as well, and the new seating makes this more practical.

Gallagher thanked several organizations who made the furniture purchase possible.

“Next year will mark 40 years of our serving the community. We hope all our programs can continue for another 40 and feel like this has been an investment in our future.”

A listing of the center’s free and low-cost public events, along with information for schools or groups wishing to schedule a program, is available at www.carboneec.com.

Several organizations sponsored a table and will be recognized with a permanent plaque. Two sponsorships remain. Anyone interested in making a donation to provide one can call the center at 570-645-8597.
