Palmerton supports Thorpe extension of blight grant

Palmerton has backed a blight grant extension from Jim Thorpe.

Borough council on Thursday agreed to support the extension of the grant for blight remediation.

Before the vote, Manager Autumn Canfield explained that Jim Thorpe needs the support.

Lehighton Borough Council in March agreed to send a letter of support from the borough to the state supporting the extension of the grant for blight remediation.

Palmerton was part of a grant with Lehighton and Jim Thorpe boroughs for blighted properties.

Jim Thorpe has been having some problems with a property it wants to demolish and needs an extension.

A vacant home at 204 Center Ave. in Jim Thorpe was slated to be torn down using part of a combined $300,000 state grant the municipality partnered with Lehighton and Palmerton borough to receive in 2021.

Jim Thorpe said it didn’t have enough grant money left to cover post-demolition remediation.

In September 2022, Jim Thorpe Borough Council approved a motion to authorize the borough manager to reapply for funds for the demolition of 204 Center Ave., along with the associated necessary restoration to 206 Center Ave. in order to complete the project.

For years, Jim Thorpe borough has unsuccessfully tried to track down the owners of 204 Center Ave., listed as Emma & James Owen Real Estate LLC.
