Palmerton Girl Scouts collect 1,800 items for pantry

The Girl Scouts from the Palmerton area showed their spirit this past weekend at their annual Souper Bowl of Caring.

They collected more than 1,800 food items over three days. On Monday evening, the food was delivered to the CACPAC Palmerton Food Pantry, which is located at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Fireline Road in Palmerton.

Several troops from the Palmerton area took turns staffing the table and collection carts.

Susan Arner, one of the co-directors of the Palmerton pantry, said that Country Harvest plays a significant role in the collection process.

“They reached out to us and asked what we needed, so we provided them with a list of the most sought-after items,” Arner said. “That’s why you’ll see signs all around their store, guiding people to purchase those specific things.”

Arner and John DeSousa are the co-directors of the Food Pantry. They work to ensure that a substantial amount of food is distributed to those in need.

Apart from the generous donations from the Girl Scouts, the pantry also receives discounts from local stores like Country Harvest and Giant. Additionally, they order a significant amount of food from Second Harvest in Nazareth.

The next food distribution is on Friday, Feb. 23.

“That means that on either Wednesday or Thursday of that week, we’ll be receiving about 8,000 pounds of food from Second Harvest,” Arner said.

Palmerton Area Girl Scouts consists of 12 troops and has 130 girls with 82 registered adults.
