Walnutport has inked a deal with neighboring municipalities for yard waste recycling.
Borough council on a 6-0 vote Thursday approved the yard waste agreement between the borough, Slatington and Washington Township.
Councilman David Wentling was absent.
Public works director Mike Wentz said that twice a year, they (Washington Township and Slatington) bring the grinder in, and added it will cost Walnutport Borough $2,200 a year.
“Our 904 grant can pay for that; it’s a win-win,” Wentz said. “We’ll put it in the fenced-in area by the Public Works facility.”
Wentz stressed that the grant is written that it is for residents only as yard waste, not to include grass, and it will be taken to Washington Township.
He added that this will end up helping all three municipalities get more grants down the road.
In December, Wentz said the borough was approved to start its yard waste program/facility.
Wentz said at that time the borough could have it up and running by spring, as it was now part of another compost in conjunction with Slatington and Washington Township.
Wentz said the borough can take its yard waste there, and that it won’t be at a cost to taxpayers.
