Local Roundup: Results from Feb. 8

The Panther Valley and Marian boys basketball teams prepared for the upcoming district playoffs by gaining wins in their season finales.

The Panthers downed Southern Columbia, while the Colts topped Tri-Valley.

Also ending regular-season play with a victory were the Weatherly girls.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Panther Vy.-So. Columbia

A strong second half by Panther Valley lifted the Panthers to a 64-50 non-league victory over Southern Columbia.

Chase Weaver scored 15 of his game-high 19 points over the final two quarters as PV overcame a five-point halftime deficit.

Logan Fisher contributed 18 points to the winning effort, while Drew Kokinda added 16.

The Panthers, who sealed the victory by going 9-of-10 at the free throw line in the final quarter, improved to 13-9.

Jacob Hoy topped the Tigers (12-6) with 15 points.

Tri-Valley-Marian

Jesse Rodino scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to help Marian gain a 67-59 Schuylkill League victory over Tri-Valley.

The Colts, who also received seven points from Jacob Miller in the final frame, trailed by a point after three quarters.

James Rodino collected 15 points for the winners, who finished the regular season at 13-9 overall and 8-5 in the league, while Miller added 14.

For the Bulldogs, who dropped to 17-5 and 8-5, Dawsyn Manning tallied a team-high 17 points.

Weatherly-MMI Prep

MMI pulled away from Weatherly for a 56-30 non-league victory.

After being held scoreless in the first quarter, Ryan Sanz hit for 18 of his game-high 21 points in the middle frames to help the Preppers turn a narrow two-point lead into a comfortable 12-point advantage.

The winners, now 12-9, also received 19 points from Nick Pantages.

Corbin Wagner tossed in 12 points for the Wreckers, who slipped to 2-19.

Weatherly-MMI Prep

Weatherly closed its season on a positive note, gaining a 34-23 non-league victory over MMI Prep.

Bethany Houser scored five points in the opening quarter as the Wreckers raced to a 13-point lead.

Houser finished with a team-high 13 points, while Brianna Pugh contributed eight.

For the Preppers, Bria Kringe scored 19 of her team’s 23 points.

Weatherly ended the year 4-18, while MMI is 5-17.

SWIMMING

Marian-PM West

The Marian girls edged Pocono Mountain West, while the Panther boys cruised past the Colts.

Lydia Strucko and Zoe Katona both won multiple individual events to help the Fillies gain a 67-61 victory.

Strucko took the 50 free style and 100 backstroke, while Katona captured the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

In the boys competition, which PM West won by a 100-34 margin, Marian’s Michael Strucko earned a win in the 50 freestyle.

Tamaqua-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain posted a 36-28 win over Tamaqua.

Greg Tirpak scored a team-high 14 points for the Blue Raiders, who ended their season 8-8.

8TH GRADE

Panther Valley-Tamaqua

Chase McArdle scored 23 points to lead Panther Valley to a 51-27 victory over Tamaqua.

The Panthers, who finished the season 14-4, also received 10 points from Tyler Hall.

Deondre Marshall led the Blue Raiders with 16 points.

7TH GRADE

Panther Valley-Tamaqua

Panther Valley defeated Tamaqua 39-16 to end its season with a 9-6-1 record.

Jayden Honshiko scored 14 points to lead the Panthers, while Carson Jones chipped in with eight.

The Raiders received a team-high eight points from Mason Evans.

JR. HIGH

GIRLS BASKETBALL

8TH GRADE

Tamaqua-Panther Valley

Millie Black scored 16 points to help Tamaqua defeat Panther Valley, 45-17.

The winners also received 14 points, which included four three-pointers, from Coleman.

PV was led by Kathryn Breslin’s seven points, while Danika Blazosky added six.

7TH GRADE Panther Valley-Tamaqua

Panther Valley edged Tamaqua by a 16-15 score.

Kathtyn Breslin hit three three-pointers and finished with 14 points for PV.

The Raiders received seven points from Gormley and six from Jones.
