Local Roundup: Results from Feb. 6

The Northwestern boys and girls basketball teams both posted wins on Tuesday to earn home games in the upcoming Colonial League playoffs.

The Tiger teams defeated Catasauqua and will host league quarterfinal games on Saturday.

Other winners included the Palmerton and Panther Valley boys.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Panther Valley-Lehighton

A big game from Connor Penberth helped Panther Valley close out Schuylkill League play with a 59-43 victory over Lehighton.

Penberth finished with a game-high 23 points, with 21 of them coming in the first half.

The Panthers, who went 10-of-14 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to secure the win, also received 12 points from Logan Fisher and 11 from Drew Kokinda.

Joe Roth led the Indians with 22 points, while Cole Dietz chipped in with eight.

PV is now 12-9 overall and 6-8 in the league. Lehighton completed regular-season action at 14-8 and 6-8.

The Indians won the JV game, 63-58, in overtime.

Palmerton-Northern Lehigh

Palmerton cruised to a 74-30 victory over Northern Lehigh in both teams’ Colonial League finale.

Eleven different players scored for the Blue Bombers, with Matt Machalik leading the way with 23 points. Machalik tallied eight of those in the opening quarter as Palmerton raced to a 24-6 lead.

The winners, now 13-8 overall and 13-4 in the league, also received 19 points from Brayden Hosier.

Nick Buskirk posted a team-high 15 points for the Bulldogs, while Connor Simms added 10.

The loss ended Nolehi’s season at 2-20 and 0-17.

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Northwestern clinched a home game in the upcoming Colonial League playoffs by gaining a 48-41 victory over Catasauqua.

Gavin Nelson scored a team-high 17 points for the Tigers, who earned the No. 4 seed in the league and will host Bangor in a quarterfinal contest on Saturday.

The winners, who finished regular-season play on a three-game winning streak, improved to 15-7 overall and 12-5 in the league.

Mason Bollinger contributed 11 points to the Northwestern cause, while Del Tyler added 10.

The Rough Riders (8-13; 7-9) received a team-high 17 points from Franklin Pujols.

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Pine Grove used a second-half rally to hand Jim Thorpe a 59-48 Schuylkill League setback.

Led by Ben Goldberg’s 11 first-half points, the Olympians built a 10-point halftime lead.

The Cardinals, however, outscored Thorpe 38-17 over the final two quarters to earn the victory. Chase Sarge had 10 of his game-high 14 points in the second half to spark the comeback.

Pierce Gothard also finished with 11 points for the Olympians, who ended their season at 1-21 overall and 0-14 in the league.

Pine Grove upped its mark to 4-18 and 2-12.

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua

Blue Mountain clinched the Schuylkill League Division 1 title with a 57-47 victory over Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders tried to play spoiler and led by four at the half, but the Eagles rallied after the break for the win.

Tyeirre Meade scored a game-high 17 points for Blue Mountain, which ended league play at 13-1. The Eagles are 20-2 overall.

Tamaqua, which closed regular-season play at 11-11 and 6-8, was led by Connor Dillon’s 15 points, while Cooper Ansbach added 12.

Nativity pulled away from Weatherly to gain an 84-56 Schuylkill League victory.

The Wreckers trailed by just one after the first quarter, but were outscored by 23 points over the next two frames.

Trey Keating poured in a game-high 33 points for the winners, who improved to 13-9 overall and 9-4 in the league. The victory clinched a league playoff berth for Nativity.

Weatherly (2-18; 1-11) was led by Ian McKeegan, who finished with 15 points. Corbin Wagner and Austyn Lamonica both contributed 12.

Mahanoy Area ended regular-season play undefeated by posting a 59-40 Schuylkill League victory over Marian.

Jace Yedsena hit six three-pointers - including five in the third quarter - en route to a 21-point performance that helped the Bears finish 22-0 overall and 13-0 in the league.

Mahanoy, which hit 11 treys in the contest, also received eight points from both Chris Cuff and Kadin Styka.

For the Colts, now 12-9 and 7-5, Julius Currie and Jesse Rodino both scored a team-high 12 points, while James Rodino added 10.

Northwestern closed out regular-season action with a 50-42 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

The win clinched the No. 4 seed in the league and a home game in Saturday’s league playoffs.

Cara Thomas paced the Tigers with 13 points, while Emma Freeman hit four three-pointers and ended with 12. Northwestern, now 17-5 overall and 12-5 in the league, also received 10 from Brook Balliet.

For the Rough Riders, Sophia Bear and Hailey Jenkins shared game-honors as both finished with 15 points.

The loss dropped Catty to 14-8 and 10-7.

Panther Valley-Lehighton

Panther Valley gained a 66-48 victory over Lehighton.

Jarrell Thomas and Chase McArdle both had 16 points to lead the Panthers, while Kaden Koerbler added 13. McArdle hit four three-pointers, while Koerbler had three.

The Indians’ Kyden Hauser finished with a game-high 19 points. Owen Eckhardt ended with 14, and Cash White chipped in with 10.

8TH GRADE

Panther Valley-Lehighton

Panther Valley posted a 50-34 victory over Lehighton.

Chase McArdle poured in a game-high 26 points for the Panthers (12-4), while Cy Maynard added 11.

The Indians were led by Aiden McCarroll’s 16 points.

7TH GRADE

Panther Valley-Lehighton

Lehighton rallied for a 35-31 victory over Panther Valley.

Quinn Heimbach topped the Indians with a game-high 15 points.

PV received 10 points from both Carson Jones and Jayden Honshiko.
