Cooks with Collars contest ends Feb. 12

There is still time to vote for your parish priest, or your favorite, through the annual Diocese of Allentown Cooks with Collars competition.

The competition aims to show off a number of their priests’ skills, while helping to raise money for the parishes.

Cooks with Collars is open for voting until Feb. 12, and priests from all over the diocese are showing off their knowledge of the kitchen. Videos of the priests showcasing their cooking skills - or lack of skills - have been posted to the website www.cookswithcollars.com.

There are 44 parishes participating in the competition this year, including the local parishes of Assumption BVM of Slatington; last year’s winner St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley in Summit Hill; St. Richard of Chichester of Barnesville and St. John XXIII of Tamaqua; Sacred Heart in Palmerton; St. Teresa of Calcutta in Mahanoy City; Holy Cross in New Philadelphia; and SS. Peter and Paul of Lehighton.

The current leaders include Holy Trinity of Whitehall with $12,900 raised; St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley in second place, with $10,200; and Holy Family of Nazareth with $10,055.

Voting for parishes costs $10 a vote and can be done either by going to the Cooks with Collars web page or, as in St. Joseph Parish, by bringing money and a written vote to the parish office, which will then be submitted via the website. Money raised will help the parishes, as well as Catholic Charities. There is no limit to how often you can cast a vote.

Winners in the competition will be announced on Feb. 13.
