Local roundup: Results from Feb. 3

Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks and Lehighton’s Addison Chavanic both earned individual titles at wrestling tournaments on Saturday.

The Palmerton girls extended their winning streak, while the Northwestern boys and Weatherly girls also picked up victories.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Brandywine-Northwestern

A big second quarter helped Northwestern pull away for an eventual 77-47 non-league victory over Brandywine Heights.

Trailing by two after the first frame, the Tigers outscored the Bullets 29-7 over the next eight minutes to take command.

Gavin Nelson posted a game-high 19 points for Northwestern, while Del Tyler contributed 13. The winners also received 12 from Mason Bollinger.

For the Bullets, Seamus Coffin tallied a team-high 14 points.

The Tigers are now 14-7, while Brandywine dropped to 5-12.

Northwest Area-Weatherly

The Miner connection proved to be too much for Weatherly as Northwest Area earned a 63-48 non-league victory over the Wreckers.

Josh Miner scored a game-high 22 points for the Rangers (17-2), while Ryan Minor added 18.

Niko Saldukas paced the Wreckers (2-17) with a team-high 13 points. Ian McKeegan followed close behind with 12.

Stroudsburg-Pleasant Valley

In a game from Friday, Pleasant Valley continued its strong play down the stretch by gaining a 51-46 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Stroudsburg.

The Bears, who swept the Mounties in their season series, have won four of their last six games.

Zach Prator scored a team-high 19 points for PV, while Dakoda Lucas contributed 13. The winners also received 11 from Joseph Greene.

Stroudsburg was led by Denzel Key’s 19 points.

The Bears upped their mark to 8-13 overall and 4-11 in the league. The Mounts, whose six-game streak was snapped, fell to 13-8 and 8-7.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Palisades-Palmerton

Palmerton’s win streak reached 12 games after the Blue Bombers rolled to a 45-8 Colonial League victory over Palisades.

Hannah Barry drained four three-pointers in the second quarter as Palmerton used a 14-1 period to gain an 18-point halftime lead.

Barry finished with a game-high 18 points to help the Bombers improve to 20-1 overall and 16-0 in the league.

The loss dropped the Pirates to 5-14 and 4-13.

Weatherly built an early lead and maintained it to earn a 30-18 non-league victory over Bethlehem Christian.

Bethany Houser scored seven points in the first half as the Wreckers gained a 13-point halftime lead.

The winners kept the advantage in the second half as Kelly Reiner connected for nine of her game-high 13 points over the final two quarters.

Weatherly is now 3-16, while the Panthers slipped to 8-8.

Nativity-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe nearly picked up its first win of the season, but Nativity dominated overtime to earn a 63-53 non-league victory.

Sarah Hartman scored 15 of her game-high 25 points in the first half to help the Olympians gain a six-point halftime lead, but Nativity battled back over the final two frames and then outscored the host team 15-5 in the extra period.

Thorpe, now 0-20, also received 11 points from Julianna Bowen.

The winners were paced by Grace Brennan’s 18 points.

Marian-Holy Redeemer

Three players reached double-digit scoring for Holy Reedemer during a 71-45 non-league victory over Marian.

Bella Boylan scored a team-high 17 points for the Royals, who jumped out to a nine-point lead after the first quarter. The winners also received 15 points from both Brooke Kroptavich and Mckenzie Chimock.

The Fillies’ Frankie Martinelli led all scorers with 20 points, which included six three-pointers. Carly Minchhoff chipped in nine points.

The loss dropped Marian to 18-3, while Redeemer is now 17-4.

McKayla Strunk registered a double-double on Friday to lead Stroudsburg to a 70-37 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Strunk scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Mounties, now 13-7 overall and 10-5 in the league.

For the Bears, who dropped to 2-19 and 2-13, Katelyn Honadel led the way with 14 points, while Ryan Rosenberg added nine.

BOYS WRESTLING

Tamaqua Duals

Tamaqua finished with a 2-4 record during the Tamaqua Duals.

The Blue Raiders defeated Hamburg (43-29) and Williams Valley (42-33), but lost to Big Spring (43-24), Germantown Academy (36-33), Trinity (59-22) and Wyomissing (51-24).

Gabe Erbe went 5-1 during the tourney, while Aiden Schlier finished 4-1 with four falls. Brody Schlier and Chase Zeigenfuss both posted 4-2 records with all their wins coming via the pin, while Jacob Hehn also ended the tourney with a 4-2 mark.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Lady Vikings Classic

Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks earned another tournament title, taking first at 235 pounds at the Lady Vikings Classic.

Banks registered a quick 19-second pin in the semifinals before gaining a fall over Peyton Fries at 2:00 of the finals.

The Panthers, who finished eighth in the 19-team tourney, also received a second place from Alisa Williams at 170. Williams posted a 1:38 pin in the semis before falling in the championship round.

Kyla McQuillen added a third at 148. McQuillen had two pins, including a 20-second fall in the third-place bout.

Lady Trojan Invitational

Lehighton’s Addison Chavanic captured the 190-pound championship at the Lady Trojan Invitational at Upper Dauphin High School.

Chavanic posted a pin in 2:04 during her semifinal match, before gaining a fall in 1:34 over Tesse Henise of Dallastown in the finals.

The Indians, who placed ninth in the 23-team field, also received a third place from Maggie Pagotto. Pagotto posted three pins during the tournament, including a 1:33 fall in the third-place match.

Pink Panther Duals

Palmerton gained a narrow 25-24 victory over Hanover at the Pink Panther Duals at Pocono Mountain West.

In the only two bouts wrestled, Cassidy Merkel gained a key 11-2 major decision at 124 pounds.

The Blue Bombers also received a 9-3 decision win from Gretchen Schaible at 130.
