Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 30

The Marian boys clinched a district playoff berth, while Panther Valley’s Chase Weaver reached 1,000-career points on Tuesday.

Tamaqua also picked up three wins, as the swimming teams swept Mahanoy Area and the boys basketball squad downed Pine Grove.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Connor Dillon poured in a game-high 25 points to help Tamaqua gain a 59-31 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.

The Blue Raiders, who used a 26-7 second quarter to take control, also received 18 points from Noah Mateyak.

Quinn Brommer tallied a team-high 12 points for the Cardinals.

Tamaqua is now 10-10 overall and 5-7 in the league. The Raiders need to win one of their final two games to clinch a district playoff berth.

The loss dropped Pine Grove to 2-17 and 1-11.

Marian-Shenandoah

Julius Currie exploded for 37 points to power Marian to a 70-33 Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah Valley.

Currie tallied 13 points in the opening quarter as the Colts, who clinched a district playoff berth with the win, raced to a 17-4 advantage.

Marian, now 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the league, also received seven points from AJ Thomas.

Chase McCole and Esturado Salguero both finished with eight points to lead the Devils (2-17; 1-9).

Panther Valley-Pottsville

Panther Valley’s Chase Weaver reached the 1,000-point plateau, but Pottsville ended up winning a 63-43 Schuylkill League contest.

Weaver needed seven points to reach the milestone and finished with a team-high 13. His three-point play in the third quarter allowed him to become the seventh PV boys player to score 1,000 points. Weaver also added six rebounds.

The Tide, however, remained undefeated in league play as Latrel Montone tallied a game-high 14 points.

The Panthers, now 11-8 overall and 5-7 in the league, also received eight points from Drew Kokinda and 11 rebounds from Logan Fisher.

Pottsville, winners of nine straight, improved to 15-5 and 12-0.

Blue Mountain cruised to a 78-47 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Isaac Thomas scored 21 of his game-high 23 points in the opening half as the Eagles built a 47-21 halftime lead.

The winners, now 18-2 overall and 11-1 in the league, also received 15 points from Tyeirre Meade.

Pierce Gothard registered a team-high 10 points for the Olympians, who made 10 three-pointers.

The loss dropped Thorpe to 1-19 and 0-12.

Minersville pulled away in the middle frames to gain a 56-26 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

The Wreckers stayed close after the first quarter, trailing just 15-10, but the Miners outscored the host team 37-11 in the second and third quarters.

Dante Carr and Bradley Kestishak paced Minersville, now 12-7 overall and 6-5 in the league, with 14 points apiece.

Weatherly (2-15; 1-10) received a team-high 10 points from Ian McKeegan.

PM West-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley gained an early lead on Pocono Mountain West, but couldn’t maintain it as the Bears eventually dropped a 61-47 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference contest.

Joseph Green scored seven of his team-high 13 points in the opening quarter as PV earned a 17-12 advantage.

But Adrian Brito posted 10 points in th second frame and 13 in the third as the Panthers rallied back. Brito finished with a game-high 31 points.

West, now 17-3, also received 14 points from Kyon Coles Jr.

Zach Prator ended with 11 and Sean Hallenbeck chipped in with 10 for the Bears (6-13; 2-12).

Alyssa Ford scored 18 points while Anai’sah Malone added 16 as the Panthers (13-7) built a 40-8 halftime lead.

Ryan Rosenberg had six points for the Bears (2-17). Katelyn Honadel added five.

The Bulldogs claimed the Division 2 title this season with a 5-0 mark.

Brian Welser had a pin for the Panthers (1-4 D2) at 285 pounds, while Jah Bushati posted a decision victory at 145.

Tamaqua-Mahanoy

Tamaqua swept a Schuylkill League meet against Mahanoy Area.

The Blue Raiders posted a 117-14 victory in the boys meet, while the girls secured a 112-50 win.

Jathan Krall scored wins in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle events for Tamaqua (5-3), while Stephen Behun won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Krall and Behun were also on the winning 200 medley relay, while Behun was a member of the first-place 200 freestyle relay.

Lexi Buchala won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle for the Blue Raiders (7-1) in the girls meet, while Savannah Wilson placed first in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Wilson and Buchala were on the winning 400 freestyle relay, with Wilson also a member of the 200 medley relay.
