Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 25

Tamaqua’s swim teams swept North Schuylkill on Thursday, while the girls basketball team defeated Jim Thorpe.

The Lehighton girls also posted a victory, while the Marian and Northern Lehigh girls saw long winning streaks come to an end.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Lorelei Plasha and Makayla Bartenope both finished with double-doubles to help lead Tamaqua to a 72-28 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe on Senior Recognition Night.

Plasha collected 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Bartenope tallied 16 points and pulled down 12 boards.

The Blue Raiders, who built a 48-12 halftime lead, also received 11 points from Sarah Hope and 10 from Sam Plasha.

For the Olympians, Sarah Hartman scored a team-high nine points.

Tamaqua improved to 13-5 overall and 6-5 in the league, while Thorpe fell to 0-16 and 0-11.

Teammate Jaylah Yeakel contributed with seven points.

Lehighton-Pottsville

Lehighton jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 40-23 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

Charli McHugh scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the first half as the Indians raced to a 15-point advantage.

The winners, who improved to 10-9 overall and 5-6 in the league, also received nine points from Emma Repsher.

Jo Barnhart paced the Tide (3-15; 2-9) with 13 points.

Marian-Williams Valley

Williams Valley ended Marian’s 16-game winning streak by pulling off a 42-29 Schuylkill League stunner.

The Vikings shut out the Fillies in the opening quarter, and only allowed them seven points over the first three frames.

Sage Smeltz scored a game-high 20 points for Williams Valley, which has now won six straight.

Marian, which hadn’t lost since its season opener against Scranton, received 13 points from Abby Fritz and 11 from Carly Minchhoff.

The 29 points are the fewest the Fillies (16-2; 9-1) have scored in a game this season.

The win pushed the Vikings record to 13-6 and 7-3.

Pen Argyl-Northern Lehigh

Pen Argyl and Northern Lehigh both entered their Colonial League matchup on nine-game winning streaks, but it was the Green Knights who continued their streak with a 60-55 victory.

Ellie Wallbillich poured in a game-high 30 points to help Pen Argyl improve to 14-4 overall and 11-3 in the league. Wallbillich scored seven of her points in the second quarter as the Knights used an 18-8 period to gain a double-digit lead.

The winners also received 10 points from Mary Kotula.

For the Bulldogs, now 12-7 and 9-5, Aubrey Pollard tallied a team-high 23 points, while Katelyn Barthold added 12. Tegan Simms also chipped in with 11.

Weatherly-Mahanoy Area

Mahanoy Area’s defense shut down Weatherly in posting a 51-8 Schuylkill League victory.

The Bears only allowed one point in the first half in building a 24-point advantage.

Felicia Bro provided the bulk of the offense for Mahanoy, scoring a game-high 30 points, including four three-pointers.

The Wreckers’ top scorers - Kaylee Gaydoscik and Brianna Pugh - both scored three points.

Weatherly slipped to 1-14 overall and 0-10 in the league, while the Bears are now 6-10 and 5-5.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northern Lehigh-Pen Argyl

Pen Argyl rallied in the fourth quarter to gain a 47-45 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Jacob Martini scored seven of his 11 points in the final frame as the Knights used a 14-7 period to offset a five-point deficit.

Mason Soos and Chase Kennedy each had 16 points to pace Pen Argyl.

For the Bulldogs, Kellen Bauer collected a game-high 19 points, while Connor Simms was close behind with 18. Both Bauer and Simms connected on four three-pointers.

The loss dropped Northern Lehigh to 2-17 overall and 0-14 in the league. Pen Argyl stands at 4-14 and 4-10.

SWIMMING

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

Tamaqua recorded a Schuylkill League sweep of North Schuylkill.

The Blue Raider boys cruised to a 110-48 win, while the girls earned a 103-79 victory.

Jathan Krall was part of four firsts - two individuals - in the boys meet. Krall won the 200 and 500 freestyle events, and was part of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Lexi Buchala and Savannah Wilson both captured two individual events in the girls competition. Buchala took the 200 and 500 free, while Wilson touched the wall first in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Both girls also swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Tamaqua-Nativity

Tamaqua knocked off Nativity, 42-27.

Greg Tirpak scored 15 points to lead the Blue Raiders, while teammate Jacob Denning added 11.

8TH GRADE

Weatherly-Lehighton

Weatherly edged Lehighton, 34-28.

Kolton Reiner posted a team-high 11 points for the Wreckers, while Kyle Reiner chipped in with eight.

The Indians were led by Landon Steigerwalt’s seven points.

7TH & 8TH GRADE

Panther Valley

Panther Valley’s seventh and eighth-grade team captured the Bedford Memorial Tournament Championship in Minersville.

In the opening game, the Panthers defeated host Minersville 41-20.

Chase McArdle scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Panthers to the title game to face North Schuylkill.

The Spartans and PV needed overtime to determine the champion, with the Panthers eventually gaining a 56-53 victory.

Tyler Hall erupted for a game-high 25 points for the winners, while Chase McArdle chipped in with 19 points.

JR. HIGH GIRLS BASKETBALL

8TH GRADE

Weatherly-Lehighton

Lehighton defeated Weatherly, 28-15.

Amber Yeakel and Sophia Serfass both had six points to lead the Indians.

The Wreckers’ Katie Knock led all scorers with 11 points.

Jim Thorpe-Panther Valley

Jim Thorpe cruised to a 45-13 victory over Panther Valley.

C. Lees poured in a game-high 23 points for the Olympians. B. Yuhas also contributed 17.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Jim Thorpe pulled out a 20-19 victory over Pottsville.

C. Lees scored seven points to lead the Olympians.

7TH GRADE

Jim Thorpe-Panther Valley

Jim Thorpe rolled to a 42-12 win over Panther Valley.

A. Aponte scored 23 points for the Olympians, while O. Snisky added 13.

For PV, Breslin finished with seven.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Pottsville edged Jim Thorpe, 22-18.

The Olympians received a team-high seven points from A. Garritano.
