Business buys Kids Closet Sale, plans to expand

The Times News Media Group has passed the torch of The Kids Closet Sale.

On Thursday, the Times News Media Group sold The Kids Closet Sale to G&D Bargain Sales LLC of Avoca, Luzerne County.

Gwendolynne Peters, new owner, said she is thrilled to purchase The Kids Closet Sale.

“I’m super-excited,” Peters said. “You can’t beat it in this economy.”

Peters said she has been consigning with The Kids Closet Sale for many years.

“I love being able to consign clothes for children to be purchased at affordable prices,” she said. “I plan to continue it locally, and will be expanding to Luzerne County and surrounding areas.”

It was announced in November that after five years helping families save money on children’s necessities, the Times News Media Group would be discontinuing The Kids Closet Sale consignment event.

Jennifer Benninger, the advertising director at Times News Media Group and coordinator for The Kids Closet Sale, said that since the pandemic, The Kids Closet Sale has experienced a steady decline in participation and interest. While the September sale proved to be successful, it was a tougher experience than previous sales, she said.

“A sale this big requires a lot of planning and resources to host,” Benninger said. “We rely on consignors to provide us with inventory and a workforce to make each event a success.

“Unfortunately, The Kids Closet Sale suffered a big hit after COVID-19 that we weren’t able to recover from.”

Benninger said she hopes The Kids Closet Sale proves to be a huge success moving forward.

“I wish nothing but success for the new owner of The Kids Closet Sale,” she said. “It is a valuable resource to our community. I hope it lives on to help those in need for years to come.”

The Kids Closet Sale is a semiannual children’s consignment event. The sale provides the local community with an opportunity to save money on new or gently-used, name-brand children’s items while providing the chance to clean out, have fun and make extra cash.

The sale was started about 14 years ago by Danielle Andreas before the Times News Media Group purchased it in 2019.

In 2022, The Kids Closet Sale moved to the Slatington Expo Center at the Markets at Slatington.
