Cameras capture illegal parkers in Tamaqua

Tamaqua Police Chief Michael Hobbs told borough council Tuesday that automated cameras mounted on poles are in service at a number of sites in the borough.

The devices, called SafetySticks, were installed recently at illegal parking areas in the borough.

“We actually have them up and activated,” Hobbs said.

The solar powered devices snap photos of those who park in the illegal areas, then send the vehicle information to the department. Tickets are then sent.

“I believe that any violations that began in January will start getting billed,” Hobbs said.

SafetySticks were installed at 100 E. Broad St. (Five Points intersection); 2 Mauch Chunk St.; 101 Schuylkill Ave., and South Railroad Street near M & S Hardware store. Two SafetySticks are on Berwick Street, and four are between 42 and 44 Mauch Chunk St.

Council President Brian Connely asked Hobbs to provide council with an update on the Safety-Sticks each month.

“I just want to see how they’re working,” he said.

In keeping with police news, Mayor Nathan Gerace said that the department had training scenarios at the Tamaqua Area School District properties.

“Just to ensure school safety and student safety and make sure they’re prepared, should anything ever go on at the school,” Gerace said.

The trainings were held Dec. 27, when classes were not in session.

“The school administration joined us,” as well as school resource officers, Hobbs said.

“It was very successful,” Gerace said.
