Coroner names Franklin man who died in fire

The Carbon County coroner identified the man who died after a garage caught fire early Wednesday morning in Franklin Township.

Coroner Mark K. Smith said Steve Sensinger, 58, died as a result of the fire. Smith said Sensinger was found inside the garage.

Smith said the cause of death is pending, as an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday morning.

“(What) alerted the neighbor was he heard the explosion, had gone out and saw smoke coming form the building,” Smith said. “It was mostly all smoke.”

Township fire Chief Lynn Diehl said firefighters were dispatched just before 3 a.m. to 251 Canal St. for a structure fire.

“There wasn’t much of a fire,” Diehl said. “There was an explosion involved that ended up taking a man’s life.”

Diehl said firefighters made entry into the garage where the fire broke out adjacent to the home.

“There was smoke coming out of the building, a neighbor had called it in,” he said. “It basically blew itself out.”

Diehl said there was a dog inside that survived.

He said the garage sustained minor damage, and added it took just a few minutes to knock down the fire.

Diehl said firefighters were on scene for about a half-hour.

He said state police and the Carbon County Coroner’s office also arrived on scene.

Diehl said the fire remains under investigation.
