Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 18

Three area basketball teams clinched district playoff berths with wins on Thursday.

The Lehighton and Northwestern boys, as well as the Tamaqua girls, all earned spots in postseason action.

The Indians downed Jim Thorpe, while the Tigers topped Moravian Academy. The Lady Raiders, meanwhile, dropped Pottsville.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lehighton-Jim Thorpe

Joe Roth poured in a game-high 30 points to help Lehighton roll to a 73-51 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Roth scored 15 of his points in the first quarter to help the Indians gain a double-digit lead. He added 13 in the third frame, as the winners outscored the Olympians 29-13 to put the game out of reach.

Cole Dietz hit five three-pointers in his 18-point performance for the Indians, who improved to 11-5 overall and 4-5 in the league. The victory clinched a district playoff berth.

Aaron Curran paced the Olympians (1-16; 0-9) with 17 points.

Moravian Ac.-Northwestern

Twelve different players scored as Northwestern rolled to a 68-28 Colonial League victory over Moravian Academy.

The win, their fifth in a row, clinched a district playoff berth for the Tigers.

Gavin Nelson paced Northwestern with a game-high 20 points, while Eli Zimmerman contributed nine. The Tigers built a 49-20 advantage by halftime.

For the Lions, Jackson Reid tallied a team-high 11 points.

Northwestern is now 11-4 overall and 9-2 in the league. Moravian slipped to 4-10 and 3-8.

Saucon Valley pulled away from Northern Lehigh for a 70-45 Colonial league victory.

Jack Robertson scored a game-high 10 points for the Panthers, who have won four straight.

The Bulldogs received a team-high 19 points from Connor Simms, while Kellen Bauer added 11.

Saucon upped its record to 9-5 overall and 7-4 in the league. Nolehi dropped to 2-14 and 0-11.

Jaen Chatman scored 36 points and East Stroudsburg South turned back Pleasant Valley to claim a 67-65 overtime victory in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

Chatman scored 16 of his game-high total spread across the fourth quarter and overtime for the Cavaliers (8-7).

Zach Pandolfo, who drilled three treys, and Zach Prator scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, for the Bears (4-11), who rallied from a 45-38 deficit at the end of the third period to force overtime.

Pandolfo poured in 10 points - including two threes - in the fourth quarter, while Prator scored nine points in the final period. Dakoda Lucas hit four threes and added 14 points for PV.

Tamaqua ended a three-game losing streak and clinched a district playoff berth as the Blue Raiders posted a 44-33 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

Kendle Miller led the way for the Blue Raiders (11-4 overall; 5-4 league), as she netted a game-high 12 points.

Lauren Ligenza pulled down 13 rebounds and had eight points for the winners, while Kolbe Robb posted nine steals and five assists with her nine points.

Keirra Jones paced the Tide (2-14; 1-8) with 11 points.

Lehighton cruised to a 51-19 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.

Ryleigh Trotman and Charli McHugh led the Indians (8-8 overall; 3-6 league) with 14 points apiece.

Trotman netted six of her 14 in the third quarter, while McHugh recorded 10 of her 14 over the first half.

Amara Robinson paced the Olympians (0-13; 0-9) with seven points, while Kiara Ginopolas hit two three-pointers and finished with six.

Carly Minchhoff had a game-high 16 points, Abby Fritz added 14, and Deanna Pugh chipped in with 13 to lead the Fillies (14-1), who haven’t lost since an opening-game setback to Scranton.

Grace Header led the Bulldogs (0-14) with nine points.

Northern Lehigh chalked up its seventh win in a row, cruising to a 61-20 Colonial League win over Saucon Valley.

Katelyn Barthold had the hot hand for the Bulldogs (10-6 overall; 7-4 CL), as she led all scorers with a 19-point performance. Aubrey Pollard and Teegan Simms added 12 and nine points, respectively.

Maggie Gorman finished with eight points for the Panthers, who slipped to 2-11 overall and 1-10 in the league.

Luna Lopez led the Lions (4-9; 4-8) with 10 points.

Palmerton edged host Notre Dame of Green Pond 45-42 in a battle of Colonial League unbeatens.

Hannah Barry had a game-high 15 points for the Blue Bombers, who kept their league mark unblemished at 10-0 and raised their overall record to 13-1. Meagan Matsko added nine points for Palmerton.

Notre Dame fell to 10-1 in the league and 12-3 overall. Ellen Schweitzer led the Crusaders with 10 points.

Ayla Schneck-Haines led the Cardinals (6-8) with 10 points.

John Hargrave (114), Aidan McCabe (133) and Jason Schubert (215) all had pins for the Bears (7-15), while Michael Pomilito added a major decision at 121 pounds.

Tamaqua and Pottsville split their Schuylkill League meet.

The Blue Raider girls gained a 119-52 win, while the boys dropped a 102-77 decision.

Lexi Buchala (200 and 500 free) and Savannah Wilson (200 IM, 100 Breaststroke) both had multiple individual firsts for Tamaqua in the girls contest.

Meanwhile, Jathan Krall paced the Raider boys with firsts in both the 200 and 500 free.

The Tamaqua girls are now 10-1, while the boys are 6-5.
