2 rescued from truck in flooded area in Lehighton

Two people were rescued Thursday night after a truck they were on got stuck in a flooded out area in Lehighton.

Borough fire Chief Pat Mriss said the dispatch came in at around 8:30 p.m. at the access road behind Dunbar’s to the Lehigh River.

Mriss said that the fire department’s dive team encountered a truck that was stuck in a flooded out area underneath the trestle area.

He said two people were rescued from the truck.

“Due to the high waters, it wasn’t running and they were up against a tree,” Mriss said. “They were stranded in the truck in the high waters.”

Mriss said the people were transported to the hospital for evaluation.

He said they were on scene for about an hour, and that also assisting the fire department were the Lehighton Borough Police Department, Lehighton EMS, and Lehighton fire police.

Mriss said it’s important that “just as always, never drive through water. PennDOT has the slogan “turn around, don’t drown.”

“Whether it’s standing water, moving water, don’t drive through it,” he said. “This was a fortunate situation where they were able to be rescued, but you never know how deep the water is.”
