Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 5

Panther Valley defeated Weatherly in a boys basketball game between a pair of area teams on Friday night.

In other hoop action, the Northwestern and Pleasant Valley boys recorded victories; and the Palmerton, Marian and Northern Lehigh girls all won.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Weatherly-Panther Valley

Stephen Hood scored 11 third-quarter points to help Panther Valley pull away from Weatherly and gain an 80-65 non-league victory.

The Panthers led by just two points at the half, but Hood sparked a 28-16 third frame that allowed the winners to gain a double-digit advantage.

Logan Fisher, who added eight points in the third period, finished with a career-high 24 points for PV, now 6-4, while Hood finished with 17. The winners also received 11 points from Chase Weaver.

For the Wreckers, who fell to 1-9, Ian McKeegan and Austyn Lamonica both tallied a team-high 16 points. Corbin Wagner contributed 13, while Niko Saldukas added 10.

Pen Argyl-Northwestern

Northwestern used a big third quarter to pull away from Pen Argyl and claim a 45-24 Colonial League victory.

The Tigers, who were led by Gavin Nelson’s 17 points, held a five-point halftime lead before outscoring the Green Knights by a 19-7 margin in the third to take control.

The winners, now 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the league, also received 11 points from Mason Bollinger.

Chase Kennedy topped Pen Argyl (1-11; 1-6) with eight points.

Bangor used a big second quarter to pull away from Northern Lehigh for an eventual 80-57 Colonial League victory.

The Bulldogs trailed by just a point after the first period, but J Singer scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the next frame as the Slaters took a 16-point halftime advantage.

The winners, who improved to 7-4 overall and 7-1 in the league, also received 15 points from H McShane.

Connor Simms poured in a team-high 19 points for Nolehi, while Nick Buskirk added 10.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-10 and 0-7.

Megan Matsko added 11 points for the Bombers (10-1, 7-0), while Mikayla Pengelly and Ella Baumgardt chipped in eights points apiece.

Aby Colon had eight points for Wilson (2-9, 1-8).

Marian’s winning streak reached 10 games after the Fillies cruised to a 59-22 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

Addy Fritz scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first half as Marian raced to a 29-point halftime advantage.

The Fillies, now 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the league, also received 14 points from Frankie Martinelli and 10 from Carly Minchhoff.

The loss dropped Mahanoy to 4-7 and 3-2.

Panther Valley held off Pottsville for a 48-39 Schuylkill League victory.

Maddison Maynard scored 11 of her team-high 14 points in the opening quarter as the Panthers gained an early lead.

Mikayla Yurichek tallied all eight of her points in the second half to help secure the win for PV.

The winners, now 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the league, also received 11 points from Morgan Orsulak.

Jo Barnhart of Pottsville (2-10; 1-4) led all scorers with 15 points.

North Schuylkill kept its Schuylkill League record perfect with a convincing 49-23 victory over Lehighton.

Olivia Burke scored nine first-quarter points as the Spartans raced to an early 22-5 lead.

Burke finished with a game-high 14 points, while the winners also received 10 from both Mya Conti and Haley Kroutch.

The Indians were paced by Charlie McHugh and Emma Repsher, who each tallied eight points.

North Schuylkill upped its mark to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the league, while Lehighton slipped to 7-5 and 2-3.

Northern Lehigh won its third straight game to reach the .500 mark after posting a 55-43 Colonial League victory over Bangor.

Teegan Simms scored seven of her 16 points in the third quarter as the Bulldogs extended a six-point halftime lead to 18 heading into the final frame.

The winners, now 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the league, received a game-high 17 points from Katelyn Barthold while Aubrey Pollard contributed 13.

Avery Nelson led the Slaters (7-4; 5-3) with 15 points.

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

Pen Argyl ended Northwestern’s eight-game winning streak by earning a 61-54 Colonial League victory.

The Tigers actually trailed by 19 points entering the fourth quarter and tried to rally from the huge deficit. Northwestern outscored the Green Knights 20-8 in the final frame, but the comeback effort came up just short.

Cara Thomas scored a game-high 29 points for the Tigers, including eight in the fourth.

Pen Argyl’s Ellie Wallbillich finished with a team-high 21 points, while Macy Kotulka added 16. The winners, now 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the league, also received 13 from Julia Vargo.

The loss dropped Northwestern to 9-2 and 5-2.

The Golden Girls trailed by four entering the final period but outscored Weatherly 13-3 behind five points from Grace Brennan to pull out the win.

Reagan Bennett led Nativity ((2-6, 1-3) with 13 points.

Kelly Reiner scored 11 points to lead the Wreckers (1-7, 0-4). Bethany Houser and Brianna Pugh added nine points apiece.
