Carbon’s new coroner makes changes

Carbon County’s new coroner is making some changes to the department’s staff.

During the county commissioners’ meeting on Tuesday, the board of commissioners vote to acknowledge several personnel moves that are not directly overseen by the county.

Mark Smith was sworn in Tuesday as the new county coroner after defeating Robert Miller in the general election.

According to the personnel report, attorney Robert Yurchak will no longer serve as the department’s solicitor. He was replaced with attorney Adam Weaver.

In addition, Jason T. Smith of Parryville replaces Gerald D. Jones Jr. of White Haven as the chief deputy coroner.

Other moves in the coroner’s office include the appointments of Jeffrey T. Leighton and Jason A. Nicholas, both of Lehighton, as deputy coroners and the hiring of David Stianche of Jim Thorpe as a deputy coroner as long as he meets all hiring requirements.

In other personnel matters, the county acknowledged the appointment of Ryan Zaengle of Lansford as a special deputy sheriff trainee, effective Jan. 8.
