Man charged with threats after barricading in room

A Jim Thorpe man has been charged with making terroristic threats.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Richard Weinstock of the Pennsylvania State Police, Fern Ridge barracks in the case against Carson Nelson:

On Dec. 13, PSP were notified by Carbon County 911 Center that Nelson, 28, located in the 100 block of Cold Spring Drive, Jim Thorpe in his driveway, had a pistol and was going to shoot himself.

Nelson’s father told police he heard a loud pop come from the driveway, and checked on his son, Nelson, who was fine.

Nelson then placed the firearm in his vehicle and went into his bedroom.

Nelson told his father that he planned to die through suicide by cop, and that he planned to shoot at the cops in order to have the police shoot and kill him.

Nelson further told his father that he just wanted the police to kill him.

Nelson had barricaded himself in his bedroom with a loaded shotgun.

PSP members from Fern Ridge, Stroudsburg and Hazleton arrived on scene and formed a perimeter around the residence. Nelson surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody and transported to the Fern Ridge barracks for an interview, and which time he said he had received bad news in the morning, and that had upset him.

Nelson said that he began drinking alcohol all day and spent the majority of his night at Penn Forest Fire Company with two of his friends.

Nelson said the he ensured his two friends he had a ride home and then he walked to his residence, and that upon his arrival home, he retrieved his 40 mm pistol and went to the end of the driveway where he said he attempted to shoot himself, though police did not locate a bullet.

He said he barricaded himself in the bedroom after that.

Police took two 9 mm pistols, one 40 mm pistol and a 12-gauge shotgun from the home.

Nelson was transported to St. Luke’s Carbon Campus for a mental health evaluation before the criminal charges.

Nelson is currently free in lieu of $10,000 unsecured bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Jan. 3 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
