Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 30

Tamaqua’s Erika Barron gained her 100th career coaching win as the Blue Raider girls rolled past Mahanoy Area on Saturday.

The Raiders also gained a sweep of Marian in swimming action.

In other girls basketball action, Marian downed Allentown Central Catholic.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mahanoy Area-Tamaqua

Tamaqua rolled to a 56-22 non-league victory over Mahanoy Area to give head coach Erika Barron her 100th career win.

Barron is the third winningest coach in the program’s history, trailing Karen Rottet and Joe Berezwick.

Makayla Bartenope scored a team-high 12 points for the Blue Raiders, who raced to a 10-point first-quarter lead and used a 20-7 third quarter to put the game away.

The winners also received nine points and seven rebounds from Lorelei Plasha, while Kendle Miller chipped in with nine points.

Lauren Ligenza added six steals as Tamaqua improved to 9-1.

The Bears (4-6) were paced by Ella Connolly, who scored 12 points.

Central Catholic-Marian

Marian won its eighth game in a row, downing Eastern Pennsylvania Conference foe Central Catholic by a 54-41 score.

Carly Minchhoff poured in a game-high 22 points for the Fillies, who improved to 8-1. Minchhoff tallied eight points during a 17-9 fourth quarter that allowed the winners to pull away from the Vikettes.

Aliya Tiktova added 10 points, including an 8-of-10 effort at the foul line, while Frankie Martinellii added nine.

Central, now 7-3, received a team-high 12 points from Armani Brickhouse.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Northampton

Northwestern jumped out to an early lead but Northampton stormed back to earn a 49-32 non-league victory.

Ethan Kozlowski scored a team-high 10 points for the Tigers, who held a two-point advantage after the opening quarter.

The Konkrete Kids, who were paced by JJ Kolumber’s 13 points, used a 19-6 second frame to lead at the break.

Northwestern, which dropped to 5-3, also received eight points from Shane Marth.

The win upped Northampton’s record to 7-2.

The Kids won the JV game, 52-46.

SWIMMING

Marian-Tamaqua

Tamaqua swept Marian in swimming action.

The Blue Raiders girls posted a 102-55 victory, while the boys earned a 99-35 win.

Lexi Buchala and Savannah Wilson both won a pair of individual events for the Tamaqua girls. Buchala captured the 200 and 500 freestyle events, while Wilson touched the wall first in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

Marian’s Lydia Strucko also claimed two wins, taking the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

In the boys contest, the Blue Raiders received multiple wins from Stephen Behun (50 and 100 freestyle) and Jathan Krall (200 and 500 freestyle).

The Colts were paced by Michael Strucko, who took the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.

WRESTLING

Gov. Mifflin Tournament

Palmerton’s Derek King earned a second-place finish at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament.

King reached the finals with a 10-0 major win in the opening round, a 1:08 pin in the quarterfinals, and a 4-2 decision in the semis. The Bombers’ 145-pounder battled Nicholas Walker of Cape Henlopen (DE) in the championship round before dropping a 13-9 decision.

Palmerton’s Caleb Gaffney turned in a fourth-place finish at 172, posting three wins during the tourney, while Dillon Lombardi ended in seventh place at 152. Lombardi also collected three wins.

The Bombers finished 14th out of 21 schools in the team standings.
