LVHN reports ransomware investigation

The Lehigh Valley Health Network reported in March that ransomware attacks resulted in patient information and photos being posted online.

The attack led to sensitive photos of nearly 2,800 cancer patients being leaked on the dark web.

LVHN said BlackCat, a ransomware group associated with Russia, attacked its system in February.

The network launched an investigation, and notified law enforcement.

LVHN refused the data hacker’s demands to pay a more than $5 million ransom and as a result, the hackers posted nude images of numerous LVHN patients on the dark web.

The network said hackers also acquired names, addresses, phone numbers, medical record numbers, treatment and diagnosis information, and health insurance information.

The information also included email addresses, banking information, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers for some patients, the network reported.

LVHN notified the patients whose information was involved.
