Monroe officials honor John Moyer
The Monroe County commissioners honored one of their own, as well as two others and recognized the accomplishments of an Eagle Scout at their meeting on Wednesday morning.
Outgoing Commissioner John Moyer was recognized for 12 years of service as a public official for Monroe County.
“It’s been a pleasure serving the people of Monroe County. It’s been an honor, and it’s been a very enjoyable experience. I can’t say every day has been, but for the most part it’s been enjoyable,” Moyer said. “As most of you know, I’m a numbers guy. When I came into office, we had a fund balance - which is money left over from prior years - that was in the neighborhood of $150,000. You might look at it and say that’s quite a bit of money. Well, not so on a budget of $135 million.
“I’m pleased to report that through the efforts of all of the commissioners with whom I’ve served, our fund balance going into next year is about $9 million, which is a step in the right direction, and the county is in very fine financial shape. I was part of it but I wasn’t the major part of that. It was the people with whom I work that are responsible for those kinds of improvements. I thank the people of Monroe County. It’s been a pleasure and an honor.”
The commissioners also honored Greg Christine, who is the chief clerk, for 24 years of service. He has been both an employee and a former commissioner.
Attorney John Dunn was recognized for 36 years of service.
Dunn thanked many people whom he has worked with over the years. He said he has worked with 16 commissioners. Of them, 10 were Republican and six were Democrat.
“I’ve said this before publicly. We’re in a politicized time, I just think people need to realize that their local government is not really politicized at all. It hasn’t been politicized,” Dunn said. “They’ve done a good job, and I am glad to have been a part of it. I’m proud to say that what we see on a national scale is not what is going on in the county. That’s a major accomplishment for all of those commissioners.”
And Eagle Scout John Richard Pomeroy was recognized for his achievement in earning the Eagle Scout award.
