Tamaqua cuts down on illegal parking

Tamaqua is getting tough on illegal parking with the help of automated cameras called “SafetySticks.”

The SafetySticks are outfitted with solar-powered cameras that will “catch” those who park where they shouldn’t.

Tamaqua Police Chief Michael Hobbs said 10 sticks are being are being placed in “No Parking” zones throughout the borough.

They’re problem areas, like the Five Points intersection where Routes 209 and 309 meet, he explained.

“People are constantly parking at the corners of the Five Points intersection and then you have trucks trying to turn and they can’t,” Hobbs said.

If they attempt to make the turn, it takes time - and traffic becomes congested, he noted.

Other areas are fire zones on Berwick and Mauch Chunk streets near the Citizens and American Hose fire companies. When people park there, Hobbs said, it impedes the passage of fire trucks.

The sticks are from Municipal Parking Services (MPS) and use radar vehicle detection technology to capture footage when vehicles enter and exit illegal parking zones. The information is then sent to the borough police.

“Our officers will review the MPS site and download the provided information and pictures of violators then send them a fine,” Hobbs said. “If the fine is not paid we will then issue a traffic citation.”

The SafetySticks are being installed at no cost to the borough. MPS will receive 10% of what is brought in through traffic tickets.

SafetySticks will be installed at 100 E. Broad St. (Five Points intersection); 2 Mauch Chunk St.; 101 Schuylkill Ave., and South Railroad Street near M&S Hardware store. Two SafetySticks will be installed on Berwick Street, and four will be placed between 42 and 44 Mauch Chunk St.

Ten SafetySticks like the one shown here near the intersection of West Broad and Berwick streets were recently placed in Tamaqua in hopes of curbing illegal parking. The devices contain solar powered cameras that detect illegal parkers. JILL WHALEN/TIMES NEWS
