Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 21

The Jim Thorpe boys and Panther Valley girls both gained basketball wins on Thursday.

Lehighton’s wrestling team also gained a victory against Northwestern.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Western Wayne-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe posted its first win of the season by holding off Western Wayne for a 60-55 non-league victory.

Ben Goldberg scored eight of his team-high 14 points in the opening half as the Olympians built a 14-point advantage.

Thorpe hit 16 free throws over the final two frames to secure the decision.

The winners, now 1-9, also received 11 points from both Brody Schrantz and Aaron Curran.

For the Wildcats, Evan Dean tallied a game-high 26 points.

Pleasant Valley-Nazareth

A big second half allowed Nazareth to rally for a 59-49 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

The Bears jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead before the Blue Eagles outscored PV by a 38-17 margin over the final two quarters.

Sina Ramin led Nazareth with 16 points, while Mason Kuehner added 15.

Pleasant Valley received a team-high 16 points from Jereal Moore. Sean Hallenback added 13, while Zach Prator chipped in with 11.

The Eagles upped their record to 5-2. The Bears, meanwhile, dropped to 1-7.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Panther Vy.-Mahanoy Area

A huge second half by Maddison Maynard helped Panther Valley earn a 56-45 non-league victory over Mahanoy Area.

Maynard scored 25 of her game-high 31 points over the final two quarters as the Panthers erased a halftime deficit.

PV trailed by four at the break, but Maynard hit for 14 points in the third frame as her team took the lead.

Morgan Orsulak also came up big for the Panthers, finishing with a double-double. Orsulak collected 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Panther Valley is now 6-3, while the Bears fell to 3-4.

Nazareth-Pleasant Valley

Nazareth cruised to a 54-23 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

The winners built a 12-points halftime lead and then used an 18-2 third quarter to seal the win.

Renee Wells scored a game-high 16 points for the Blue Eagles, now 6-2, while Sophie Cole added 11.

For the Bears, Aryn Stivala accounted for 15 of her team’s 23 points.

The loss dropped PV to 2-7.

BOYS WRESTLING

Lehighton-Northwestern

Lehighton registered four pins to help gain a 45-27 non-league victory over Northwestern.

The Indians opened the match with falls from Aidan Gruber at 114 and Connor Dugan at 121, before the Tigers countered with consecutive pins from Kenny Kerekes (127) and Trent Croll (133).

Lehighton took control with three straight victories and a forfeit win. Evan Wentz earned a technical fall at 139, Carter Hontz added a major at 145, and Konner Nalesnik posted a 27-second fall at 152.

Ethan Nothstein closed out the match for the Indians (4-1) with a pin at 107.

Northwestern (2-3) also received falls from Nate Geiger (172) and Luke Fugazzotto (189), as well as a decision from Noah Shlofer (215).

Five pins by the Hurricanes (1-3) helped overcome two forfeits to gain their first team win of the season.

The loss dropped Nolehi to 1-4.

Marian-North Schuylkill

North Schuylkill registered a sweep of Marian in swimming action.

The Spartans gained an 89-58 win in the boys meet, while the North Schuylkill girls pulled out a narrow 57-52 victory.

Michael Strucko, Lydia Strucko and Zoe Katona all posted multiple individual wins for Marian.

Michael Strucko was first in both the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle in the boys competition.

Lydia Strucko touched the wall first in both the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle, while Katona topped the competition in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Other wins by Marian came from Andrew Metters (100 backstroke) and Delaney Erickson (100 butterfly).

Panther Valley edged Weatherly, 21-17.

The Panthers’ Danika Blazosky led all scorers with eight points, while Kathryn Breslin added six.

Katie Knock had seven points for the Wreckers, and Maci Kane chipped in with six.
