A 27-year-old man is facing several charges, including receiving stolen property, after a two-car crash last week in Palmerton, according to police.
At 6:41 p.m. Dec. 14, state police at Lehighton responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Little Gap Road and Forest Inn Road/Delaware Avenue.
Palmerton police officer Adam Shimer witnessed the crash and attempted to detain the occupants of a Ford Econo-line work van, as they attempted to flee the scene of the crash.
Shimer detained the driver, Jonathan Jose Herrer, and a front seat passenger. The rear passenger fled on foot before state police arrived.
Herrera told officers that he did not have a driver’s license.
Police learned through an investigation that Herrera did not own the work van, and that he had taken it from a man he had done work for without permission.
Police also say that the passenger in the front seat was someone Herrera met earlier in the day and was giving a ride to the Palmerton area.
Police later found the back-seat passenger who fled, saying the man was Herrera’s nephew.
Trooper John Heffner conducted the crash investigation, and it was determined that the Ford Econo-line being driven Herrera failed to stop at a stop sign while traveling west on Little Gap Road at the intersection of Forest Inn Road/Delaware Avenue.
Herrera struck a 2022 Mazda CX5, which was operated by a woman.
Herrera faces charges of driving without a license, receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of motor vehicle, operating vehicle without required financial responsibility, registration and certificate of title required, and duties at stop sign.
Herrera is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Dec. 27 before District Judge William J. Kissner of Palmerton.
