Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 18

Northwestern gained wins in both boys and girls basketball action Monday as both Tiger teams defeated Catasauqua.

Other wins were recorded by the Marian and Palmerton boys teams.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marian-Weatherly

Marian received scoring from 10 different players in cruising to a 71-46 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Julius Currie tallied 13 of his game-high 20 points in the first half to help the Colts race to a 20-point halftime advantage.

The winners also received a double-double from Jesse Rodino, who finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Bruce Hopeck tossed in 10 points and pulled down seven boards, while James Rodino added 10 rebounds.

For the Wreckers, Corbin Wagner ended with a team-high 17 points and Ian McKeegan chipped in with 10.

Marian improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the league, while Weatherly slipped to 0-6 and 0-3.

No. Lehigh-Palmerton

Palmerton won its fourth game in a row, rolling to a 69-34 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Matt Machalik netted nine points in the opening quarter as the Blue Bombers built a 25-9 lead.

Brayden Hosier finished with a game-high 21 points for the winners, while Machalik ended with 15. Palmerton, now 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the league, also received nine points from Logan Anthony.

For the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-5 and 0-3, Connor Simms collected a team-high 18 points.

Catasauqua-Northwestern

Northwestern earned its third straight win to open the season, downing Colonial League foe Catasauqua by a 71-32 score.

Gavin Nelson posted a game-high 15 points for the Tigers, who led by 24 at the half. The winners, now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the league, also received 12 points - including three three-pointers - from Shane Marth.

The Rough Riders (1-6; 1-3) were led by Jeremiah Cofie’s nine points.

N. Schuylkill-Panther Vy.

North Schuylkill used a strong second half to pull away from Panther Valley for a 55-40 Schuylkill League victory.

Zane Zulkowski recorded 13 of his game-high 20 points over the final two quarters as the Spartans built on their three-point halftime lead. Jude Maziekas added all nine of his points after the break to aid the win.

For the Panthers, Drew Kokinda poured in a team-high 15 points, including three three-pointers.

The loss dropped PV to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the league. North Schuylkill upped its mark to 5-2 and 3-1.

Pottsville jumped out to a fast start and finished the game with 11 three-pointers as the Tide registered a 68-47 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Christian Alvarez and Derek Watkins both scored 10 first-half points as the winners led by 25 at halftime.

Letrel Montone finished with a team-high 15 points for Pottsville, including three treys. Alvarez chipped in with 13 as the Tide upped their mark to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the league.

The Indians, who fell to 4-3 and 1-3, received a game-high 17 points from Blake Roberts.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Northwestern recovered from a slow start to defeat Catasauqua 46-41 and stretch its winning streak to five games.

After falling behind by six points in the opening quarter, the Tigers outscored the Rough Riders by 11 the rest of the way in their Colonial League contest.

Cara Thomas tallied 13 of her team-high 16 points after the first period to lead the winners, while Brook Balliet finished with nine.

For Catty, Hailey Jenkins poured in a game-high 27 points.

Northwestern improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the league, while the Roughies dropped to 5-2 and 3-1.

Panther Valley posted a 44-33 win over Weatherly.

Chase McArdle led the Panthers with 14 points, while Tyler Hall added 12.

The Wreckers’ Michael Knox scored a game-high 17, while Cy Maynard added nine.

7TH GRADE

Panther Valley-Weatherly

Panther Valley defeated Weatherly, 35-8.

Michael Demyanovich and Adonis German topped the Panthers with six points apiece.

Lehighton gained a 29-18 victory over Tamaqua.

Ciara Lees had 10 points for the Indians, while Millie Black tallied 12 for the Blue Raiders.

7TH GRADE

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Olivia Snisky scored 19 points to lead Jim Thorpe to a 33-13 win over Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders received a team-high six points from Madeline Trigone.
