Bombers hold off No. Lehigh

Northern Lehigh cut Palmerton’s lead to one late in Monday night’s Colonial League girls basketball game.

But Palmerton scored the final four points to hold off the charge and post a 37-32 Colonial League win and stay unbeaten on the season.

The victory improves the Bombers’ record to 7-0.

“We definitely got a little scare and so far, we haven’t had any tight games,” Palmerton head coach Jeremy Coleman said. “It’s good for our team to have a tight one and learn how to win when it’s just the slimmest of margins.

“It was good for the team. Being undefeated, we haven’t been able to experience the drudges of a loss yet. Everything’s been good and spirits are high with the team and the girls.”

Mikayla Pengelly scored a game-high 12 points for Palmerton, hitting some key shots throughout the contest.

The Bombers held the lead for most of the game before Northern Lehigh (1-5) started to come back late.

“We’re actually just getting her back from an ankle injury, so it was really nice to have her tonight,” Coleman said about Pengelly. “She certainly helped us out with some offense tonight. She can shoot, drive and play great defense.

“She was a great addition, and came back at the right time.”

Northern Lehigh senior Aubrey Pollard recorded her 1,000th-career point in the game.

“I really don’t think about points when playing a game,” Pollard said. “I’m more focused on winning the game because I’m more of a competitive person. I want to win if it means giving someone else the points, then that’s how it is.”

That said, Pollard admitted that she is proud of the accomplishment.

“Throughout the years, I saw it coming but now that I’ve reached the number, it’s still a big shock. I still have to process it and let it sink in.”

The Palmerton defense was ready for Pollard, only limiting the senior to seven points in the game.

“I was trying to look for other people if I couldn’t get it and if someone else was open,” Pollard said.

Dekota Barthold put up a team-high 10 points for Northern Lehigh and was responsible for three of her team’s five three-pointers. Teegan Sims hit two three-pointers for the Bulldogs.

Northern Lehigh has lost its last five games after a season-opening victory over Panther Valley.

“We hit a slump right now, “ Northern Lehigh head coach Chris Heery said. “We’re playing hard and well, but we’ve hit a rough stretch of losing a few in a row.

“We just need to keep the positive attitude going.”

MILESTONE ... “We’re proud of Aubrey. She’s worked really hard, and that’s a big accomplishment,” Heery said.

BOMBER HELPERS ... In addition to Pengelly, Palmerton got six points apiece from both Sydney Frantz and Cate Morgan.
