Local Roundup: results from Dec. 16-17

Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks and Palmerton’s Derek King each wrestled their way to individual titles over the weekend. Banks placed first at the Elizabethtown Baguba Brawl, while King earned an individual title at the Carlisle Tournament.

Elsewhere, the Northwestern boys and girls basketball teams each recorded victories on Saturday. The Palmerton and Panther Valley girls teams also continued their strong seasons with wins.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Panther Valley at

E’town Baguba Brawl

Brenda Banks captured another tournament title and the Panther Valley girls’ wrestling squad left the Elizabethtown Baguba Brawl with five medalists Sunday.

A week after placing first at the Pennsylvania National Guard Invitational, Banks added another tournament championship to her 2023 resume, as she won the 235-pound title with a 3-2 decision over South Western’s Kayla Henderson.

Alisa Williams earned a fourth-place finish at 170 pounds after falling to Penn Manor’s Madison Wagner.

Anelia Bennick (155) recorded a sixth-place finish, while Kyla McQuillen and Kadence Wentz added seventh- and eighth-place honors, respectively.

Lehighton at

Tamaqua Tournament

The Lehighton and Tamaqua girls’ wrestling teams took part in the Tamaqua Tournament.

Addison Trunk posted an area best with a fourth-place finish for the host Blue Raiders, while Rylin Arroyo also added a sixth-place result at 106 pounds.

Lillian Klotz earned a fifth-place finish for the Tribe.

BOYS WRESTLING

Palmerton at

Carlisle Tournament

Palmerton’s Derek King capped the weekend with an individual title at the Carlisle Invitational.

King wrestled his way through the 145-pound bracket to earn a 3-2 decision victory over Conestoga Valley’s Teagan Ruble in the final. King opened with a tech fall (16-1) over York Suburban’s Taza Sweeney, followed by a 9-1 major decision over Waynesboro’s Calvin Myers and moved to the final with a 3-1 decision over Biglerville’s Kyler Johnson.

Bryce Smith recorded a sixth-place finish at 152 pounds for the Bombers, while Dillon Lombardi (160) placed seventh.

Josh Merkel (133) and Caleb Gaffney (172) both placed eighth.

Palmerton finished 13th out of 21 programs in the team standings. Conestoga Valley earned the overall team title.

Jim Thorpe at

Tamaqua Blue Raider Duals

Host Tamaqua went 2-3 at its Blue Raider Duals, while Jim Thorpe finished 1-4.

The Blue Raiders got the best of the Olympians (52-22) and Mahanoy Area (48-24), while Jim Thorpe also knocked off the Golden Bears (36-30).

Tamaqua’s Evan Temarantz (107) and Brody Schlier (114), as well as Jim Thorpe’s Steven Korte (121) and Peter Almeida (285), all posted 5-0 records on the day.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Pottsville

Northwestern picked up a 64-59 overtime victory against Pottsville in non-league action.

Gavin Nelson led the Tigers (2-0 overall) with a game-high 21-point performance, while Del Tyler added 19 points. Eli Zimmerman added 10 points.

Christian Alvarez paced the Tide (4-3) with 17 points, while Letrel Montone and Kole Becker added 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Nativity cruised past Jim Thorpe for a 70-41 victory.

The duo of Tyler Borden and Blake Adams each scored 15 points for the Green Wave (3-4 overall), while Noah Dolbin added 10 points.

Pierce Gothard paced the Olympians (0-7) with a team-high nine points, while Zion Spruill finished with eight points.

Palmerton remained unbeaten, earning a dominant 57-20 non-league win over Jim Thorpe.

Hannah Barry had the hot hand for the Bombers (6-0 overall), scoring 13 of her game-high 25 points in the opening quarter. Sydney Frantz, Megan Matsko and Jaylnn Herman each finished with six points.

Sarah Hartman and Kira Ginopolas led the way for the Olympians (0-6), as both tied for a team-high with six points.

Northwestern-Pottsville

Northwestern extended its winning streak to four thanks to a 54-42 non-league victory over Pottsville.

Cara Thomas netted 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half for the Tigers, who improved to 5-1 overall on the season.

Olivia Reinhart followed with eight of her 12 points in the final half, while Brook Balliet drained two treys on her way to 10 points.

Liv Peleschik finished with a team-high 16 points for the Tide (2-5), while Jo Burnhardt added 11 points.

Panther Valley rolled to a 58-28 non-league win over visiting Palisades.

Madisson Maynard sparked a trio of Panthers (5-2 overall) in double figures with a game-high 19 points.

Morgan Orsulak posted another double-double for the winners, as she recorded 19 points and 11 rebounds. Natalie Vermillion contributed 12 points.

Cara Anderson led the way for the Pirates (2-3) with eight points.
