1.8 inches of rain falls across the region

Though far from a deluge, the area received a steady dose of precipitation that began Sunday and continued overnight.

About 1.8 inches of rain fell before it tapered off earlier this morning, according to Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather. Higher elevations had a bit of snow.

“There was a good dose of rain that came yesterday and overnight,” Kines said. “The rain is done with now; I expect the sun comes out this afternoon, kind of a chilly day.”

Kines said that while always welcome, the precipitation wasn’t something the area was in dire need of.

“We were not in need of any rain; if we hadn’t gotten to close to 2 inches of rain, I don’t think it would have been a huge deal,” he said. “We are running below normal as far as rainfall is concerned over the past several months; in that respect, it gets us closer to where we should be.”

Kines said the rest of the week looks as if it will be quiet.

“It’s kind of unusual for this time of year to have such an extended period of tranquil weather,” he said. “I know there’s people out there that want the snow, but for those who do not want the snow, it’s going to be a good week.”

For those who still have some catching up to do, Kines said this week should be an ideal time for them to do so.

“If you don’t have the holiday decorations out, this is a great week to do it, holiday shopping, (should) be a perfect for it,” he said. “A lot of good things could happen this week.”

Kines said chances are against snow dropping anytime soon.

“Next week, there’s some concern that a storm comes at us from the west or southwest; if that happens, we feel that it will be too warm for snow,” he said. “If you’re asking about a White Christmas, the odds at least right now, we don’t think the odds are all that great. We don’t think it’s any higher than what a normal winter would offer.”
