Postponed event

The Family & Youth event, originally scheduled for this past Sunday at Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville, has been rescheduled for Dec. 17.

However, the church will be decorating its Christmas tree at 10 a.m. Saturday.

TOPS meetings

Today and then the next two Wednesdays, TOPS will meet at 5:30 p.m. at Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville.

On Dec. 27, the group will not meet.

Winners announced

The Christmas card winners in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church’s Christmas card contest, with the theme of Discover Advent, was announced at the church’s Discover Advent event last Wednesday.

The Christmas card contest 8th grade winner was Kira Dancel. Her card was a pencil drawing depicting God’s finger almost touching an infant in a crib.

The Outstanding Artist winner was 10th grader Jocelyn Makara. Her drawing will grace the cover of the parish bulletin during Advent.

All entries are displayed on the church’s religious education bulletin board in the hallway located next to the ladies restroom.

Legion meeting

The regular monthly meeting for the American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Santa in the Park

On Saturday, Santa will be back at the Chestnuthill Park in Brodheadsville. He is making a grand entrance on a firetruck at 10 a.m.

Those attending will be serenaded by Sax to the Max, a local high school saxophone group, which will be performing live.

This event will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. No need for pre-registration. Attendees are urged to bring a camera.

Children’s party

The American Legion Auxiliary children’s party, limited to 60 children ages 0 to 12, will be held Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. at Post 927, Gilbert. It is open to the community, but one must sign up.

Riders’ party

The American Legion Riders annual Christmas party is scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday, also at the Post home in Gilbert. Members and guests are asked to bring an unwrapped gift to be donated to the annual USMC Toys for Tots drive.

The Riders will meet for their monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Family Christmas

On Saturday, Effort UMC is celebrating its Family Christmas Celebration Pageant at 5:30 p.m.

Pageant participants are reminded to be at the church at 5 p.m. to get their respective costumes.

The next day, Sunday, there will be service at 8:30 and 11 a.m. with Holy Communion and then, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., it is time for the Youth Christmas Shoppe.

Old Time Christmas

The 33rd annual Old Time Christmas is being held at Quiet Valley, Monroe County’s Living Historical Farm this Saturday and Sunday, from 2:30 to 7 p.m.

Sunday caroling

Zion Lutheran is planning to go caroling to its homebound members and friends on Sunday. After a light lunch at noon in the parish hall, the “joyful noise” group will leave for caroling at 1:30 p.m. The snow date is Dec. 15.

Polk Tree-lighting

Polk Township is celebrating its 27th Annual Tree-lighting at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, at Polk Township’s Veterans’ Memorial and Adam’s Faith Garden at Salem-St-Paul Lutheran Church.

The event will be moved into the church if it’s very cold or snowy.

There will be crafts, food, letters to Santa, special guests, and one lucky child will get to help turn on the tree lights.

Bingo time

Monday night bingo at the American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, open to the public, continues. Card sales begin at 6:30 p.m. Playing begins at 7 p.m.

OTOH meeting

Operation Touch of Home will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the Gilbert American Legion Post 927 Home.

Officers announced

The Western Pocono Women’s Club has announced its 2024 officers.

They are: President, Lisa Altemose; 1st Vice President, Linda Troia; 2nd Vice President, Vicki Connor; Secretary, Linda Silverberg; Treasurer, Sue Shupp.

New members were welcomed. They are: Amanda Goody, Anne Gordon, Sue Healy and Dawn Phillips.

The club is asking for donations of Christmas card fronts without glitter. They will be used for next year’s Christmas cards for the Military.

The group’s annual Christmas party was set for yesterday at Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville.

The next Quilts made with Love work session is set for Dec. 14 as is Christmas caroling at Getz Personal Care Home.

Seniors dinner

Effort UMC has planned a free Christmas party for the church’s Seniors on Dec. 17.

Double services

Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church, Brodheadsville, has announced two services on Dec. 24. A Christmas Eve service will be held during the regular 10 a.m. Sunday worship time and a Candlelight service will be held at 5 p.m. The service is promised to be simple but meaningful, reminding folks that “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.”

Winter Day Camp

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is offering a Winter Day Camp on from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Dec. 28.

Wildly Wintertime Day Camp is a full day winter experience at Kettle Creek, for ages 7 to 11. There will be outdoor and indoor environmental activities that are fun and educational, led by experienced staff.

Attendees need to bring to camp: lunch, snack, reusable water bottle, backpack, extra clothing, hiking shoes or boots.

New Year’s dinner

A pork and sauerkraut dinner will be sponsored by the Western Pocono Lions Club from noon to 3 p.m., Jan. 1, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church, Rt. 209, Brodheadsville.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 570-801-7509 or at the door that day. Takeouts are also available.

Philly flower show

Come March 4 there is a Philadelphia Flower Show bus trip hosted by Chestnuthill Township’s Park Commission.

Attendees are to be at the site for leaving at 7:45 a.m. The bus leaves at 8 a.m. The return trip leaves Philly at 4:30 p.m. and anticipates being back to Brodheadsville by 7 p.m.
