Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 2

The Northwestern and Weatherly girls both opened their seasons Saturday with wins, while the Panther Valley boys also got into the win column by defeating Weatherly.

Elsewhere, Northwestern’s Luke Fugazzotto earned an individual title at the Rough Rider wrestling tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Panther Valley-Weatherly

Panther Valley used a huge second quarter to offset an early deficit and gain a 75-49 victory over Weatherly.

The Panthers, who trailed by six after the first frame, outscored the Wreckers 33-8 in the second period to take control.

Logan Fisher tallied 11 of his 15 points in the second, while Chase Weaver added six.

Weaver finished with a game-high 17 points for PV, now 1-1, while Connor Penberth contributed 10.

For Weatherly, which was playing its season opener, Ian McKeegan posted 15 points, while Corbin Wagner ended with 10.

No. Lehigh-Annville Cleona

Annville-Cleona captured the Hamburg Tip-Off Tournament championship by pulling away from Northern Lehigh 63-33 in the title game.

After a close first quarter, Anthony Pena tallied seven points during a second period where the Dutchmen outscored the Bulldogs by a 19-9 margin.

Elisha Slabach finished with a game-high 20 points for the champs, while Jonathan Shay added 15 and Pena ended with 13.

Nolehi, now 1-1, received a team-high 14 points from Nick Buskirk. Buskirk netted eight of his points in the opening frame as the Bulldogs trailed by just two entering the second quarter.

Jim Thorpe dug itself an early hole against Minersville on Friday before dropping a 55-46 decision.

A two-point second quarter led to a 16-point halftime deficit for the Olympians.

Christian Barile finished with a team-high 15 points for Thorpe, which rallied in the second half but came up short. Ben Goldberg also chipped in with eight points.

The Miners were paced by Shazier Bethea and Dante Carr, who both scored 16 points.

Pleasant Valley opened its season on a winning note Friday, cruising to a 63-37 non-league victory over Bangor.

Jereal Moore scored eight of his 14 points in the first quarter as the Bears raced to a 19-8 advantage. Zach Prator matched Moore with 14 points to tie for game-high honors.

PV also received 10 points from Darius Arce.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Whitehall-Northwestern

Northwestern was slow to start, but came on at the end to earn a 40-37 non-league victory in its season opener against Whitehall.

The Tigers managed just one point in the opening quarter and trailed by 14 after the first eight minutes.

Emma Freeman scored nine of her team-high 12 points during the middle frames to help Northwestern rally to tie the game entering the final period.

In the final stanza, three-pointers by Devon Heinly, Freeman and Mallory Conner helped the Tigers pull out the decision.

The winners, 1-0, also received nine points from Olivia Reinhart. Makaela Bordner paced the Zephyrs (0-1) with eight points.

Bethany Houser poured in a game-high 20 points to help Weatherly open its season with a 45-33 non-league victory over MMI.

Houser tallied seven points in the opening quarter as the Wreckers jumped out to an early lead. The senior also netted seven in the final frame to help her team close out the win.

Weatherly also received 10 points from Brianna Pugh, while Kelly Reiner chipped in with nine.

For the Preppers, Bria Kringe finished with a team-high 19 points.

Scranton outscored Marian in every quarter to register a 63-49 victory.

Madelyn O’Shea connected on three three-pointers in the second quarter to help the Knights gain an eight-point halftime advantage. The lead swelled to 16 entering the final frame as Finley Bittenbender drained two treys in the third period.

Zya Small finished with a team-high 19 points for Scranton, tallying 11 of them in the final stanza.

The Fillies, who were playing their season opener, received 19 points from Carly Minchhoff. Frankie Martinelli and Aliya Tikhtova both chipped in with nine.

A big second quarter by Blue Mountain propelled the Eagles to a 52-25 non-league victory over Pleasant Valley.

PV trailed by a single point after the first frame, but Blue Mountain received points from seven different players during a second frame where the Eagles outscored the Bears 17-2.

Emily Heydt and Kylie Conway both tallied 11 points to pace the winners.

The Bears, now 0-2, received a game-high 12 points from Aryn Stivala, while Seree Gaddist chipped in with eight.

Minersville rolled to a 53-12 victory over Jim Thorpe Friday in both team’s season opener.

Kaycee Raczka scored a game-high 20 points for the Miners, who raced to a 17-0 first-quarter lead.

The winners also received 10 points from Keera Brennan.

For the Olympians, Kiara Ginopolas scored a team-high four points.

Northwestern at

Rough Rider Tournament

Northwestern’s Luke Fugazzotto captured the 189-pound title at the Rough Rider Tournament.

Fugazzotto swept through his weight class, edging Dante Burns of Conwell-Egan 6-5 in the championship match.

The Tigers’ Noah Scholfer placed second in the tourney at 215, reaching the final before dropping a 5-1 decision to Catasauqua’s Chad Beller.

Northwestern’s Braydon Uricchio (114), Kenny Kerekes (127) and Trent Croll (133) all placed third.

The Tigers finished fifth in the team standings, with Conwell-Egan earning first with 286 points.
