The Tamaqua girls advanced to the finals of the Lady Raider Tip-Off Tournament with a victory over East Stroudsburg South on Friday night.

In other action, Northern Lehigh topped Panther Valley in a girls contest.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Mt. Carmel

Mt. Carmel defeated Tamaqua, 65-60, in the non-league season opener for both teams,

Jude Lazicki led a trio of double figure scorers with 17 points for the Red Tornadoes, Cole Spears added 13 and Chase Balichick had 12.

For Tamaqua, Connor Dillon had a huge performance in a losing effort with 33 points. Noah Mateyak chipped in 14 points, including four three-pointers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Katelynn Barthold led Northern Lehigh with 18 points in a 65-51 non-league victory over Panther Valley in the season opener for both teams.

Dekota Barthold also joined her sister in the double-digit point club with 16 points. Aubrey Pollard added 15 points for Northern Lehigh (1-0).

Maddison Maynard scored a game-high 19 points and also had 10 rebounds for Panther Valley (0-1). Morgan Orsulak chipped in 17 points.

Host Tamaqua advanced to the championship game of the 7th Annual Lady Raider Tip-Off Tournament with a 52-35 semifinal victory over East Stroudsburg South

Kendle Miller scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Raiders. Lauren Ligenza and Sarah Hope both added nine points with Ligenza also grabbing eight rebounds. Kolbe Robb had six points, five steals and five assists.

Pleasant Valley dropped its season opener to Bangor, 44-42.

Aryn Stivala led the Bears with 26 points, including three three-pointers. Ryan Rosenberg added six points for PV, including the team’s other three-pointer.

SWIMMING

Marian-ES South

East Stroudsburg South spoiled the first dual meet in Marian history, picking up victories in both girls and boys action.

The Cavaliers won the girls meet 59-31. The Fillies got a pair of first place finishes from both Zoe Katona (200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Lydia Stucko (200 IM, 100 butterfly). Katona and Stucko were part of Marian’s winning 200 freestyle relay team that also featured Makenzie Moyer and Kaitlyn Kisenwether.

East Stroudsburg South won the boys meet 54 1/2-18 1/2. For the Colts, 2022-23 Times News Swimmer of the Year Michael Stucko had first place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
