Couple charged in police station altercation
A Coaldale man is being charged with resisting arrest and other offenses, and his wife is facing charges of interfering with his arrest following a Thanksgiving Day incident, borough police said.
According to Coaldale police, an officer was at the police station at 1:59 p.m. Thursday waiting for an appointment with a man later identified as Jahlik Drakes, 22.
Police said Drakes was holding a cellphone and a parking ticket. Police noticed the phone was shaking and Drakes said multiple times that he was recording the conversation.
According to police, Drakes asked how he could pay the ticket, and officers advised him he could pay it there with check, cash or money order. Drakes asked if he needed to go to the borough office, but officers advised him that it was closed for Thanksgiving.
Police said Drakes kept asking if they were familiar with the “Freedom Act,” and asked them to explain it to him. Police said they did not know what he was talking about and asked him to leave multiple times.
Police said they took Drakes’ right arm and escorted him to the lobby, where he kept putting his phone in the officer’s face. Police said they opened the front door, advised him to leave several times, but he refused to go.
As the officer placed his right hand in cuffs, he opened the door and yelled toward his wife, Valarie Drakes, 35. Police said he resisted arrest by continuing to pull his left hand away from the cuffs. He also refused to turn over his cellphone.
Police dispatched for another unit to respond and finally were able to fully handcuff Drakes and get the phone.
Police took Drakes to a back room where he complained his right handcuff was too tight. Police said they were able to fit two fingers inside, but removed the cuff and handcuffed him to a bench with his left arm.
Officers said Drakes said he needed medical attention for his right hand so an ambulance was dispatched. He was later taken to St. Luke’s - Miners campus in Coaldale for further evaluation.
Police said Valarie Drakes was pounding on the door and ringing the doorbell. She demanded to see her husband and tried to push her way through the doors.
Police told her that he was under arrest and that she should leave, or she would be arrested.
Valarie Drakes continued to yell and scream, and said she did not need to leave because she was at a public place. She was again asked to leave, and as police shut the door, she attempted to push her way back in. Police were able to push her back and lock the door.
According to police, a Tamaqua officer responded and spoke to Valarie Drakes with his body camera activated. Valarie Drakes told him that she and her husband often watch police videos on YouTube and know what police can and cannot do.
She was advised to leave again but when she refused, she was told that she’d be receiving charges in the mail.
Jahlik Drakes was charged with resisting arrest, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass with threat.
Valarie Drakes was charged with obstructing administration of law, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and simple trespass.
